Reversing gray hair – possible?

Reversing the graying of hair seems like a pipe dream.

Preventing or even reversing the graying of hair is a strong contender as the holy grail of anti-aging research.

We all know that stress is a potent cause of graying, from anecdotal evidence of people’s hair going white (or falling off altogether) after a stressful experience.

At the same time, it’s also clearly not a pure function of aging, as some elderly individuals keep natural pigmented hair well into their 90s.

For some people, however, graying can be extremely premature.

Nowadays, there are reports of going gray in their teens!

Now there is a definite hereditary and/or geographical component.

The hair pigment is closely dependent on several factors, including minerals like copper, which are closely involved in the process of pigmentation.

Populations in rural coastal areas tend to preserve this dark pigmented hair into old age.

This could be explained by the large supply of copper in other minerals in seafood, and particularly shellfish.

These physical characteristics can probably be inherited across generations and can explain to a large extent the disparity of graying between individuals.

In fact, all trace minerals are probably intimately related to hair metabolism, and in particular thyroid hormone.

This is important because copper is involved in the metabolism of tyrosine, from which thyroxine (T4) is made. T4 is then converted to the active thyroid hormone, T3.

A paper by Redondo reported the darkening of white and gray hair in two patients given supplemental thyroid hormone.

The authors tested the effectiveness of topical thyroid hormone on mice, and found it promoted hair growth, as well as the darkening of hair.

There is much that we still do not understand, but at the very least, it seems like thyroid hormone is a major player in hair growth and pigmentation:

Thus, we present the first evidence that human HFs are direct targets of thyroid hormones and demonstrate that T3 and/or T4 modulate multiple hair biology parameters, ranging from HF cycling to pigmentation. – van Beek et al. (2008)

In summary, topical application of thyroid hormone, T3 (triiodothyronine) is a safe and quite possibly effective means of stimulating the hair follicle into growing pigmented hair once again.
