This one tasty superfood can cut your risk of cancer in half

One of the scariest words in medicine is cancer.

No one wants cancer, but it happens, and if you get it you are likely to get difficult treatments that make you sick and cost a ton of money.

Cancer is brutal. There is no getting around it.

If you can prevent cancer from happening in the first place, it’s always preferable compared to getting the disease and going through Big Pharma’s “curative” process for cancer.

Now, I’m NOT saying that you shouldn’t get treated for cancer if you have it.

That’s between you and your doctor and many forms of cancer require treatment.

If you have cancer make sure you are seeking appropriate medical advice.

What I AM saying is that when I see studies showing simple ways to help prevent cancer I’m going to share them with you.

In this case, it’s all about eating mushrooms.

Before I get into the study, I want to make sure you know that you shouldn’t eat mushrooms raw.

They contain chemicals that are toxic and that go away when you cook them.

So make sure you always cook any mushrooms you eat thoroughly.

Also, plain button mushrooms, the white kind in the grocery store work great.

You don’t need anything fancy at all. But fancy mushrooms do work for this as well.

In research published in Advances in Nutrition, researchers found a startling correlation between mushroom consumption and cancer rates.

Mushrooms are rich in vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants. The team’s findings show that these super foods may also help guard against cancer. Even though shiitake, oyster, maitake and king oyster mushrooms have higher amounts of the amino acid ergothioneine than white button, cremini and portabello mushrooms, the researchers found that people who incorporated any variety of mushrooms into their daily diets had a lower risk of cancer. According to the findings, individuals who ate 18 grams of mushrooms daily had a 45% lower risk of cancer compared to those who did not eat mushrooms.

18 grams of mushrooms a day equaled an almost 50% reduction in risk for cancer. That’s HUGE.

The ability to halve your cancer risk by a simple dietary change is a pretty big deal.

And while 18 grams sounds like a lot, it’s really not all that much. It’s just 1 medium mushroom per day. That’s it.

So you can cook mushrooms in advance and eat about a tablespoon a day to get the effect.

The researchers think this cancer reducing effect occurs because of a compound called ergothioneine, which is a powerful antioxidant.

“Mushrooms are the highest dietary source of ergothioneine, which is a unique and potent antioxidant and cellular protector,” said Djibril M. Ba, a graduate student in epidemiology at Penn State College of Medicine.

But don’t go looking for ergothioneine as a supplement and think that will do the trick.

Real food often contains other supporting compounds that work together to produce a particular protective effect, and having just ergothioneine (if you can even find it) won’t do the trick.

The bottom line is that eating the right types of foods can have big protective effects for the body, and eating the wrong kinds of foods can set you up for illness and an early grave.
