Our bodies produce vitamin D when our skin is exposed to the sun or we can take vitamin D as a supplement — always take the D3 type.

Adequate levels of vitamin D can help strengthen your immune system and reduce internal inflammation in your body. 

There’s also current evidence that’s showing that having enough vitamin D can reduce the severity of a viral infection.

But what most people don’t know is that vitamin D can be suppressed by certain substances…

Some of which are fairly common and regularly given to patients by doctors.

What is vitamin D?

Humans produce vitamin D when our skin is exposed to sunlight.

Vitamin D (also referred to as “calciferol”) is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in a few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. It is also produced endogenously when ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis.

You can also take vitamin D as a supplement. If you take a supplement make sure you take the D3 variety.

Because of the amount of time we spend indoors, most people in the US are deficient in vitamin D and should probably take a supplement.

Three-quarters of U.S. teens and adults are deficient in vitamin D, the so-called “sunshine vitamin” whose deficits are increasingly blamed for everything from cancer and heart disease to diabetes, according to new research.

But even if you take a supplement, you might still have vitamin D deficiencies because of substances you’re on.

What substances can suppress vitamin D?

In my research, I found that the most common substance class that can suppress vitamin D are corticosteroids

Corticosteroids double your risk of having vitamin D deficiency.

A total of 181 individuals (0.9% of the population) used steroids within the past 30 d. Overall, 5% of the population had 25(OH)D levels below 10 ng/ml. Among steroid users, 11% had 25(OH)D levels below 10 ng/ml, compared to 5% among steroid nonusers (P = 0.009). The odds of having 25(OH)D deficiency were 2-fold higher in those who reported steroid use compared to those without steroid use [odds ratio (OR), 2.36; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.25, 4.45]. This association remained after multivariable adjustment (OR, 2.21; 95% CI, 1.01, 4.85) and in a multivariable model using NHANES III data (OR, 1.88; 95% CI, 1.01, 3.48).

These types of steroids are used to treat asthma, allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus — along with many other conditions.

Other substances that can cause problems are treatments used for breast cancer and HIV.

Overall, having adequate levels of vitamin D is important for high levels of health and a strong immune system. 

So, if you are taking substances that suppress your vitamin D levels…

…then you may want to talk with your doctor to monitor your levels and get them up when needed.
