…in my Blood Pressure Transformation.But today I want to look at the potential for cacao flavonols (found in chocolate) for reducing high blood pressure.

Researchers have known for a while that cocoa flavanols can reduce high blood pressure as much as some blood pressure treatments.

Cocoa flavanols have previously been found to lower blood pressure and arterial stiffness as much as some blood pressure ‘treatments.’

But there was some concern that the flavonols could lower blood pressure too much.

So researchers from the University of Surrey designed a study to test how much these flavonols affect blood pressure.

For several days, eleven healthy participants consumed, on alternating days, either six cocoa flavanol capsules or six placebo capsules containing brown sugar. Participants were provided with an upper arm blood pressure monitor and a finger clip measuring pulse wave velocity (PWV) which gauges levels of arterial stiffness.

The results were great. Cocoa flavonols started working about 8 hours after consumption.

Significantly, effects were also, for the first time, identified at eight hours after cocoa was consumed. Researchers believe that this second peak may be due to how bacteria in the gut metabolize cocoa flavanols.

More importantly, they only lowered blood pressure if it was high. They didn’t lower blood pressure at all if it was in the normal range.

“What we have found indicates that cocoa flavanols only decrease blood pressure if it is elevated. Working with participants’ personal health technologies showed us how variable blood pressure and arterial stiffness can be from day to day and shows the role of personal health monitors in developing and implementing effective personalized care.”

It’s important to note here that the researchers were using capsules containing cocoa flavanol and not actual chocolate.

Chocolate isn’t terrible for you, but commercial chocolate can have additives that aren’t good for your health.

This is an interesting study, and might have huge potential to help people lower their blood pressure in a natural way.

Big Pharma is all too happy to give you tablets that you are supposed to take for the rest of your life.
