Tomatoes and testosterone – what could they have in common?

Find out in today’s article – I reveal something that will shock all men who enjoy tomatoes…

A 2011 article published in the American Journal of Medicine stated that testosterone deficiency affects about 30% of men over the age of 40.

The study was conducted at the Department of Biochemistry and Division of Urology, Boston University School of Medicine.

“Testosterone deficiency afflicts approximately 30% of men aged 40-79 years – it is strongly associated with aging and common medical conditions including obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.”

According to that research, testosterone deficiency causes:

  • Decreased bone mass
  • Decreased muscle mass and strength
  • Increased body fat (BMI)
  • Gynecomastia
  • Frailty
  • Fatigue
  • Depressed mood
  • Impaired cognition and impaired memory
  • Diminished libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Difficulty achieving orgasm
  • Decreased morning erections
  • Decreased sexual performance

Understandably, men are interested in the many lifestyle factors that can increase or decrease their testosterone levels.

Little-known research indicates that tomatoes may be a testosterone killer.

This study investigated the effects of tomatoes on testosterone levels in rats.

This research was conducted at the Division of Nutritional Sciences, University of Illinois and published in the Journal of Nutrition.

Rather than actual tomatoes, the study used either tomato powder or one of two compounds found in tomatoes (phytofluene and lycopene).

“To evaluate interrelations between phytofluene, lycopene, or tomato powder consumption and androgen status in 8-week-old male rats.”

The study found that tomato powder or tomato extracts lowered testosterone levels.

“Rats provided with either phytofluene, lycopene, or tomato powder had 40–50% lower testosterone concentrations than a control-fed group.”

These results indicate that tomatoes could drastically decrease the levels of masculine hormones (androgens).

“Short-term tomato-carotenoid intake may alter the flux of androgen synthesis to less potent compounds.”

Tomatoes and tomato products seem to cause testosterone deficiency – in rats anyway.

“Short-term intake of tomato carotenoids significantly alters androgen status.”

Basically, tomato compounds act like chemical castration in rats.

“Castration and short-term carotenoid intake were each found to significantly decrease serum testosterone concentrations.”

The study did not look at the effect of the tomato compounds on fertility.

But fertility has to be a concern because testosterone is primarily created in the testes.

“In men, the major circulating androgen is testosterone. The testes are the primary sources of androgens.”

The tomato powder or tomato compound wasn’t even the major portion of the animals’ diet.

For the rats who ate tomato powder, it was only 10% of their total calories.

And the isolated tomato compounds were provided in doses of less than 1 mg per day.

“Our objective was to evaluate whether a 10% tomato powder diet would alter serum androgen concentrations in rats.”

The study found that the alterations in testosterone levels were related to changes in the enzymes that produce hormones in the testicles of the animals.

“Changes in testicular steroidogenic enzymes were found.”

Scientists believe the changes in these enzymes led to the much lower levels of testosterone in the rats.

“Changes in steroidogenic enzymes with short-term carotenoid intake may alter the flux of androgen synthesis to less potent compounds.”

Scientists are studying other tomato compounds to see if there are other effects on male hormones.

“Continued research, including both long- and short-term carotenoid feeding trials, are needed to further assess a diet-endocrine relation between tomato consumption.”
