The idea that cell phones can cause brain cancer is as old as the phones themselves.

This is indeed logical.

Ever since World War II, when radar was first implemented, scientists have been aware of strong associations between microwave radiation and cancer.

And the carrier frequencies used by cell phones all fall into the microwave range.

The airwaves that help to carry words around the globe are technically microwaves…

They could literally cook food if a higher field intensity was used.

We’ve always assumed that non-ionizing radiation is safe, in general, and that microwave radiation is only damaging to the extent that it causes heating.

Therefore, since mobile communications use an energy density low enough to prevent excess heat from forming, cell phones were presumed safe in the optimistic early years of marketing them.

This initial presumption of safety led to their widespread use, and most of us use them.

After all, they are rather convenient.

But that creeping subconscious idea – almost like a Jungian archetype – that they induce brain cancer persists.

And that still makes some people search for a landline for longer conversations.

Many of us also believe that they cause prostate cancer if the phone is kept in a pocket near our sexual organs.

Police officers have been shown to have a 6.9-fold increased risk of testicular cancer…

But, as it turns out, that is only for those with the habit of placing their radar gun near their testicles.

Science indicates that phones do cause cancer…

Or at least they did during the second-generation (2G) amplitude-modulated years of cell phones:

Researchers have been collecting epidemiological data comparing cancer with cell phone use since their introduction.

And enough data had accumulated by 2012 to warrant a meta-review on the topic.

Dozens of previous studies were gathered, combined, and then analyzed for correlations.

Yet, the combined data is all across the board. If someone read just this one study, they’d probably be left confused.

“Hardell et al. [2005] reported an increased risk for analog phone users, and Schoemaker et al. [2005] found a decreased risk. Heterogeneity was large…”

Or perhaps they would just take an optimistic approach since all studies averaged together actually yield a null association.

Others might just shrug their shoulders and think, “We all have to die someday,” or It couldn’t be any worse for me than my food.”

But if they were to read the studies on cancer and EM waves in the microwave region, this data would all make perfect sense.

Such widely varying results by study year, and by country analyzed, could actually be expected.

This is because only amplitude-modulated signals have carcinogenic effects, and AM was only used during the second generation (2G) of wireless telecommunications.

The first generation used FFSK (fast frequency shift keying) encryption, which is a frequency-modulated signal.

And the third-generation (3G) technology conforms to the UMTS standard, which is also frequency-modulated.

“Earlier studies showed that the biological effects are mainly due to modulation. Unmodulated continuous frequency fields appear to be biologically inert.”

Only users of second-generation (2G) cell phones were exposed to amplitude-modulated waves, and at the same carrier frequencies that have been shown to induce ornithine decarboxylase.

Ornithine decarboxylase is the rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of polyamines. Those are powerful cell growth factors.

This enzyme is reliably associated with cancer.

Polyamines have been known to bind DNA since the 1960s. And shortly thereafter they were shown to enhance replication reliably.

“Enhancement of ornithine decarboxylase activity by exposure to microwaves requires that the microwave carrier be amplitude-modulated.”

The addition of polyamines always increases cell growth.

In 1999, researchers in India irradiated rats for two hours per day using a 112 MHz carrier wave, amplitude-modulated, at a low field intensity of one milliwatt per cm2.

The field intensity they used is comparable to that emitted by cell phones during use.

After 35 days, the rats were decapitated and the ornithine decarboxylase activity was analyzed.

The study authors did not provide details about how the rats were sacrificed (but it’s interesting to imagine the scientists using a miniature guillotine).

Even after the amount of time it took to assay it, ornithine decarboxylase was found making polyamines at an enhanced rate:

Polyamines can even increase DNA replication during PCR (polymerase chain reaction), a simple system containing only nucleotides and enzymes.

You could bet the farm that polyamines, and thus ornithine decarboxylase, will reliably increase DNA replication and cancer.

Yet, although they used an amplitude-modulated microwave – and with realistic intensities – the frequency of the carrier wave was only 112 MHz.

This is a little bit below the 450 MHz frequency used in Nordic countries, where alarming cancer rates have been reported.

Yet amplitude-modulated waves of 450 MHz can also increase ornithine decarboxylase activity. This has been proven in human cells:

In 1988, a group of American researchers used amplitude-modulated microwaves at 450 MHz – the Norwegian cell phone frequency – in a study.

They directed the waves using the same low field intensity (one milliwatt per cm2) at three different cell lines (not cell phone lines): human liver cells, human skin cells, and Chinese hamster ovary cells.

In all cell lines, ornithine decarboxylase activity increased:

So you could then infer that 2G cell phones would have caused a similar increase in ornithine decarboxylase activity inside the heads of Swedish people, leading to the alarming cancer rates.

And, in another twist, they found that the modulation frequency matters.

This is the frequency that is superimposed over the main carrier wave to encode a person’s voice:

The 450 MHz carrier frequency is always held constant, while the modulation frequency encodes the audio.

So, although high-pitched voices can certainly be obnoxious, they could actually be protective.

Scientific data implies that speakers with low-pitched voices could be more carcinogenic.

In another study, the wave’s coherence time was shown to be a factor in cell phone carcinogenesis (Litovitz, 1993).

This also means that crystal-clear audio is more dangerous – a little distortion may be safer.

Therefore, subscribing to the best carrier in your region – or the one with the most antennas – may not be such a good idea:

The choice between Sprint and Verizon could actually have dire consequences.

But this might not be true anymore… Newer generations of mobile communications are all frequency-modulated.

Although frequency-modulated waves have been shown to cause biological effects, such as inductions in heat shock proteins, they have not been shown to affect ornithine decarboxylase.

Studies show that FM microwaves are less carcinogenic.

Newer phones could still cause issues, so I’m not promoting them at all.

Yet the study contends that only the amplitude-modulated 2G microwaves are particularly carcinogenic.

This view is biologically plausible because of the increases in ornithine decarboxylase activity – and it is also supported by epidemiological data.

“Since the data reported here show that EM field exposure is capable of increasing ornithine decarboxylase activity…it is conceivable that exposure to low energy fields may promote the formation of tumors in a manner analogous to the phorbol ester compounds.”
