One of the biggest risk factors that comes along with type 2 diabetes is the effect it has on the vascular system…

Scientists have now discovered that vitamin C can lower blood pressure and decrease arterial stiffness in people with type 2 diabetes.

These researchers conducted their study at the Regional Centre for Endocrinology and Diabetes, Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, N. Ireland and published their results in the Journal of Hypertension.

In the United States, some doctors provide injections of high-dose vitamins.

One observation from intravenous vitamin C therapy is that it can lower blood pressure and decrease arterial stiffness.

“Experimental evidence suggests that intravenous administration of high-dose vitamin C has beneficial vascular effects in type 2 diabetes.”

But injecting vitamins is costly and time-consuming.

This study investigated the vascular effects of taking C orally.

They used a cheap and easily available form called ascorbic acid.

“We studied the hemodynamic effects of chronic oral supplementation in this condition.”

They recruited 23 men and 7 women with type 2 diabetes, aged 45 to 70, and split them into two groups of 15.

They gave one group 500 mg of C per day for four weeks and the other group an inactive placebo.

“Thirty patients were randomly assigned in a double-blind manner to receive 500 mg vitamin C or placebo daily.”

The researchers measured the participants’ arterial stiffness before and after the four-week supplementation period.

They also took blood pressure readings at the same time.

“Patients were studied at baseline and after 4 weeks of assigned treatment.”

The study found that supplementation with C lowered systolic blood pressure by almost 10 points.

Systolic blood pressure is the main risk factor taken from blood pressure measurements.

“Vitamin C decreased brachial systolic blood pressure from 142 to 132.”

Diastolic blood pressure also went down in the vitamin C group after four weeks.

“…diastolic pressure from 83 to 79.”

The doctors used pulse velocity measurements to analyze arterial stiffness – this measures the velocity with which the heart pumps blood around the body.

And it decreased arterial stiffness in people with type 2 diabetes.

“Oral vitamin C lowered arterial blood pressure and improved arterial stiffness in patients with type 2 diabetes.”

They did not see these beneficial effects on blood pressure and arterial stiffness in the placebo group.

The doctors now believe that oral vitamin C supplementation could lower the risk of heart problems in people with diabetes.

“As strict control of blood pressure reduces cardiovascular risk in diabetes, vitamin C supplementation may be a useful and inexpensive therapy.”

Fruits and vegetables are good dietary sources of vitamin C.

Eating fruits as your main carbohydrate source could probably get you close to the dose used in this study.

Guava fruit is probably the most easily accessible food that is high in vitamin C.

10 ounces of guava can provide about 500 mg of vitamin C – the amount used in this study.

The supplement used in this study (ascorbic acid) lists diarrhea as a very common side effect.

The more ascorbic acid you take at one time, the higher the risk of diarrhea.

This will affect the amount of vitamin C your body will absorb too.

However, another type, called liposomal vitamin C, does not stimulate bowel movement as ascorbic acid does.

So this may be a better option for some people who want to take large amounts… But it is more expensive than ascorbic acid.
