And did you know that Vitamin C also protects you against LPS?

What is LPS?

I’ll tell you in a moment. But first, let me explain how Vitamin C works…

Vitamin C is categorized as an antioxidant and it’s HUGELY important for men.

And some scientists suspected that the antioxidant effect of vitamin C could protect the brain against damage caused by inflammation.

Vitamin C alleviates LPS-induced cognitive impairment in mice by suppressing neuroinflammation and oxidative stress

These scientists carried out their animal experiments at the Chinese General Hospital in Beijing and published their results in the Journal of International Immunopharmacology.

Inflammation of the brain is called neuro-inflammation.

And scientists believe it is one of the main causes of deterioration of brain function with age or dementia.

“Neuro-inflammation is believed to be one of the primary causes of cognitive impairment.”

[cmamad id=”20840″ align=”center” tabid=”display-desktop” mobid=”display-desktop” stg=””]

Vitamin C is known to have an anti-inflammatory effect.

“Previous studies showed that vitamin C has anti inflammatory actions.”

The effect of vitamin C on neuro-inflammation has not been fully investigated.

“The role of vitamin C in inflammatory cognitive impairment is unclear.”

The researchers decided to look at the effect of vitamin C on inflammation caused by LPS.

“We investigated the effect and possible mechanism of action of vitamin C in LPS-induced cognitive impairment.”

What is LPS?

  • A toxin produced by bacteria in the gut
  • It leaks into circulation and causes inflammation throughout the body
  • LPS is known to cause inflammation in the brain
  • Exposure to LPS causes brain damage in animals
  • LPS may be a major cause of cognitive decline
  • And it is tied to both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease

The researchers injected LPS into the brains of mice.

LPS caused neuro-inflammation and cognitive impairment in the animals.

“LPS-induced memory impairment was used as the model for neuroinflammatory cognitive dysfunction.”

In another experiment, the scientists gave vitamin C to the mice before exposing them to LPS.

“Vitamin C was administered by microinjection 30 minutes prior to LPS exposure.”

Vitamin C protected the animals against LPS.

“It was found that vitamin C significantly protected animals from LPS.”

Animals given vitamin C retained memory skills after LPS exposure.

“Vitamin C protected animals from memory impairment as evidenced by improved performance in the tests.”

When the brain becomes inflamed, brain cells called microglia are over-activated.

Vitamin C prevented the activation of microglial cells.

“Vitamin C pretreatment inhibited the activation of microglia.”

The researchers also looked at markers of inflammation in the brain.

They tested two key inflammatory markers called tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β).

Vitamin C protected the brain against increases in dangerous inflammatory proteins.

“Vitamin C pretreatment inhibited the production of tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 1 beta.”

The researchers found that vitamin C also lowered levels of malondialdehyde – another key marker of inflammation.

“Furthermore, vitamin C pretreatment markedly decreased the malondialdehyde level [which was] increased in LPS-treated mice.”

Vitamin C seems to protect the brain because of its antioxidant effect.

By mopping up rogue electrons, vitamin C prevents inflammation that can damage the brain.

“Vitamin C could protect from LPS-induced cognitive impairment, possibly through the modulation of oxidative stress and inflammatory responses.”

All of us are constantly exposed to this toxin, LPS.

Getting adequate vitamin C from your diet could protect your brain from inflammatory damage.

BUT… Too much vitamin C can be a bad thing.

Most people are best off eating foods with high amounts of vitamin C.

Citrus fruits and kiwi are great sources of vitamin C.

You should always consult a healthcare practitioner about treating and diagnosing health problems.
