Why I’m so in love with oxytocin
Oxytocin is a hormone produced mostly in the brain that can have effects right throughout the body.
It’s mostly known for its roles in empathy and social bonding.
But the truth is we are really only beginning to scratch the surface about oxytocin.
More and more studies are coming out showing wide ranging roles for this neuro hormone.
In one series of experiments, researchers in Austria discovered that oxytocin can decrease inflammation caused by bacteria which we all have in our bodies.
Oxytocin affects inflammatory markers which play roles in cancer, allergies, arthritis, diabetes and atherosclerosis.
It also lowers stress hormones linked to common chronic diseases.
The human research was carried out at the Medical University of Vienna in Austria. The paper was published in The American journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism.
The scientists were following up on previous research showing that oxytocin reduces inflammation in mice and rats.
“Oxytocin is a hormone and neurotransmitter found to have anti-inflammatory functions in rodents.”
Bacterial endotoxin is a fragment of bacteria which serves as an alarm activator in the human immune system.
Endotoxin is produced in our gut and can leak into the rest of the body when the gut becomes permeable.
Because of its effect on the immune system, endotoxin is probably the most inflammatory thing in our environment.
The researchers used endotoxin as the trigger for inflammation in their experiments.
Endotoxic inflammation has been linked to almost every chronic disease – including type II diabetes, obesity and atherosclerosis.
“Here we used experimental bacterial endotoxemia to examine the role of exogenous oxytocin administration on innate immune responses in humans.”
The researchers recruited 10 healthy men for their randomized, placebo -controlled, crossover study.
The men were put through numerous experiments.
In some experiments there were given doses of endotoxin or placebo.
In some of those experiments they were also given oxytocin or placebo.
“Ten healthy men received, in a randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover design, placebo, oxytocin, endotoxin, and endotoxin + oxytocin.”
The researchers tracked blood levels of inflammatory markers and other proteins known to be affected by endotoxin and which are also implicated in many chronic diseases.
Endotoxin reliably increased stress hormones and inflammation in all of the men.
The research showed that oxytocin reduces inflammation and elevated stress hormones caused by endotoxin.
“Oxytocin reduced endotoxin-induced increases in plasma ACTH, cortisol, procalcitonin, TNF-alpha, IL-4, IL-6, macrophage inflammatory protein-1alpha, macrophage inflammatory protein-1 beta, (MCP-1),and VEGF.”
Let’s take a look at just some of these blood markers which were reduced by oxytocin…
ACTH is a hormone produced in the pituitary gland. ACTH controls the production of another hormone called cortisol.
Cortisol is essential for basic bodily processes – but chronically elevated levels of cortisol causes muscle wasting, depression, type II diabetes, low testosterone, infertility and obesity.
TNF-alpha is one of the primary inflammatory proteins. It has knock-on effects, triggering the production of a vast number of other inflammatory proteins which cause pain, swelling and disease.
Il-4 has well known roles in allergies, inflammation and cancer
MCP-1 is implicated in psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis and atherosclerosis.
VEGF stimulates the formation of blood vessels. It plays a role in cancer, arthritis and diabetic eye disease.
As you can see, the health problems caused by bacterial endotoxin are wide-ranging and serious. This research indicates that oxytocin could mitigate many of these risks.
Oxytocin has profound beneficial effects on stress hormones and inflammatory proteins.
“In summary, oxytocin decreases the neuroendocrine and cytokine activation caused by bacterial endotoxin in men, possibly due to the pharmacological modulation of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway.”
The researchers believe that oxytocin may be used as a drug to treat many inflammatory conditions.
The research also implies that living a lifestyle designed to increase oxytocin can lower disease risk.
“Oxytocin might be a candidate for the therapy of inflammatory diseases and conditions associated with high cytokine and VEGF levels.”
You should always consult your healthcare practitioner for guidance on medical diagnosis and treatment.
