Why do men gain weight in winter?

Matt Cook here, and as winter comes, the weather gets colder, the days get shorter, and life slows down.

People experience a lack of energy and don’t feel like doing much.

Some people may even show signs of depression, such as seasonal affective disorder.

You’ve probably realized by now that I don’t like winter that much.

Summer has always been my favorite season.

There’s nothing like having a cold drink basking in the sun.

Anyway, I digress, back to the topic.

While winter brings some changes to our lives, it also causes changes in our bodies.

The most obvious and most common of these is weight gain.

Many people complain of involuntary weight gain during the winter months.

When you question the reason for this, you will generally hear the following: decreased physical activity, more sleep, and holiday season foods.

Okay, these may have some effect, but most people who do the opposite also gain weight.

So what is the reason for that?

A breakthrough study sheds light on this very question.

When we refer to weight gain, it usually means gaining fat.

Fat gain, in basic terms, means an increase in fat cells, aka adipose tissues.

The human body has two types of adipose tissue: white and brown.

White Adipose Tissue (WAT) stores excess energy as triglycerides.

Brown adipose tissues have other bodily functions, but they are not our topic today.

It is the white adipose tissues that are responsible for fat gain.

In this study, researchers discovered something unexpected while experimenting on these fat cells.

The ones that lie just beneath our skin shrink when exposed to the blue light emitted by the sun.

“When the sun’s blue light wavelengths — the light we can see with our eye — penetrate our skin and reach the fat cells just beneath, lipid droplets reduce in size and are released out of the cell. In other words, our cells don’t store as much fat.

So, in other words, the fat cells grow when they aren’t exposed to the sun – this is the reason why we gain weight in winter.

“If you flip our findings around, the insufficient sunlight exposure we get eight months of the year living in a northern climate may be promoting fat storage and contribute to the typical weight gain some of us have over winter.”

Yet another benefit of the sun has been discovered.

As far as I’m concerned, the sun is the ultimate medicine.

For years they have been fearmongering people to be afraid of the sun.

However, the benefits of the sun for the human body are countless.

Think about it, it provides solar energy, which makes it possible for life to exist.

How can something this magnificent be as bad as they say?

What you should take away from this study is that the sun will help you lose fat.

And at the same time, it will make you produce Vitamin D, regulate your circadian rhythm, and give you energy.

So, go out in the sun more.

If you are afraid of sunburn, don’t eat PUFAs and acclimate your body by taking early morning and evening sun –

These will protect you from UV rays.
