We need to talk…
I’ll bet that you’ve never heard your doctor talk about non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)…
…even though it affects ¼ of the population in the United States and causes HUGE health issues over time.
NAFLD is increasingly common around the world, especially in Western nations. In the United States, it is the most common form of chronic liver disease, affecting about one-quarter of the population.
One of the big problems with NAFLD is that it messes up your sugar metabolism.
The liver is responsible for storing a good part of your glycogen reserves — which your body used for energy…
And when your liver is fatty, it can’t store as much glycogen.
This lack of storage space for glycogen can contribute to many other metabolic disorders — including diabetes.
Even if doctors know about the dangers of non alcoholic fatty liver disease, they have no idea how to treat it to get your liver in a healthy place again.
Currently, there are no pharmacological treatments for NASH because scientists don’t understand the mechanics of the disease.
That doesn’t mean it’s not possible to take care of your liver health (see the bottom of this article).
There’s also new research that shows that getting extra B vitamins can be helpful to de-fatting your liver.
Importantly, the researchers found that supplementing the diet in the preclinical models with vitamin B12 and folic acid increased the levels of syntaxin 17 in the liver and restored its role in autophagy. It also slowed NASH progression and reversed liver inflammation and fibrosis.
I want you to pay particular attention here to the data that shows that B12 can reverse liver inflammation and fibrosis.
The reason that inflammation and fibrosis are so important is that these two conditions are the drivers of many chronic diseases.
If you can get rid of chronic inflammation and fibrosis in your body then you can help to heal your body from the inside out, instead of just treating the symptoms of disease.
In addition to the chronic health conditions that NAFLD can contribute to, if you have this condition it can also sometimes progress to liver failure.
Some individuals with NAFLD can develop nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), an aggressive form of fatty liver disease, which is marked by liver inflammation and may progress to advanced scarring (cirrhosis) and liver failure. This damage is similar to the damage caused by heavy alcohol use.
Since the only treatment for liver failure is a transplant, it’s important to reverse non alcoholic fatty liver disease early in order to prevent potential liver failure down the road.
“Currently, the only treatment for patients with end-stage liver disease is to receive a transplant. The findings by Dr Tripathi and her colleagues demonstrate that a simple, affordable and accessible intervention could potentially halt or reverse the damage to the liver, bringing new hope to those suffering from fatty liver diseases.”
The liver isn’t an organ that gets a whole lot of press, but it is critical to good health.
If you have a liver that is functioning properly, then you will have far fewer health issues and your metabolism will work better.
It’s worth it to pay attention to the health of your liver…
