The primary way you can get vitamin D is either through sunshine or a supplement.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. It is also produced endogenously when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. Vitamin D obtained from sun exposure, food, and supplements is biologically inert and must undergo two hydroxylations in the body for activation

Vitamin D helps with many bodily functions, but it turns out it can also help people recover from hip fractures more quickly.

Hip fractures are more common than most people think.

Hip fractures are fairly common, especially if you are over the age of 65. 

There are over 300,000 hip fractures in the US every year.

A broken hip – among the most serious fall injuries – is ‘difficult’ to recover from, with many people unable to live on their own afterward. In the United States, more than 300,000 people 65 or older are hospitalized for hip fractures annually and falling causes more than 95 percent of these types of fractures. 

And if you have a hip fracture it can be VERY difficult to recover from because it’s often tough to gain back mobility and the ability to walk. 

That’s where Vitamin D comes in.
