The mechanisms behind the metabolic benefits of milk are not entirely understood…

And an experiment involving dolphins seems to shed a little more light on the matter.

Researchers discovered that a little-known fat which is found in abundance in dairy foods is also present in some fish…

And the amount of this fat in the diet and blood of dolphins had a profound effect on their metabolic health.

The dolphin research was performed at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego, California. The paper was published in PLoS One.

“Similar to humans, bottlenose dolphins can develop metabolic syndrome and associated high ferritin.”

Ferritin is a blood protein that contains iron.

The researchers were looking at the relationship between ferritin and metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is the combination of high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.

The researchers were also interested in the widely repeated but not well-supported claims that omega-3 fatty acids from fish can improve metabolic health.

So they decided to see what was going on in other mammals who consume a lot of fish – dolphins.

They compared 2 dolphin pods – 1 which had significantly higher insulin levels than the other.

“Fatty acids were compared between two dolphin populations with higher (A) and lower (B) mean insulin (11 vs 2) and their dietary fish.”

They found that the group with higher insulin had significantly lower levels of heptadecanoic acid in the blood.

Heptadecanoic acid is a type of fat which is found in some fish and in dairy fat.

The levels of heptadecanoic acid in the blood were strongly inversely correlated with insulin levels.

“In addition to higher insulin, triglycerides, and ferritin, Group A had lower percent serum heptadecanoic acid compared to Group B (0.3 and 1.3).”

The researchers confirmed the relationship using statistical analysis.

“Using multivariate stepwise regression, higher percent serum heptadecanoic acid, a saturated fat found in dairy fat, rye, and some fish, was an independent predictor of lower insulin in dolphins.”

The researchers also discovered that there was a relationship between 3 things:

  1. The type of fish these dolphins ate
  2. Their insulin levels
  3. And the levels of heptadecanoic acid in their blood

“Capelin, a common dietary fish for Group A, had no detectable heptadecanoic acid, while pinfish and mullet, common in Group B’s diet, had abundant heptadecanoic acid.”

Altering the dolphin diet to increase the consumption of heptadecanoic acid also helps to improve the problems of high insulin and high ferritin.

“When a modified diet was fed to six Group A dolphins (increasing heptadecanoic acid intake from 400 to 1700 mg), heptadecanoic acid serum levels increased, high ferritin decreased…”

The researchers showed that increasing heptadecanoic acid in the diet of these marine mammals significantly improved their metabolic health.

“When increasing heptadecanoic acid intake from 400 to 1700 mg blood-based metabolic syndrome indices normalized toward reference levels.

The work may explain one of the reasons why full-fat milk – a food rich in heptadecanoic acid…

…seems to help with diabetes and other metabolic problems in other mammals, such as humans.

Of course, heptadecanoic acid is concentrated in the fat of dairy foods.

Butter will have the largest amount per ounce and non-fat dairy products will have none.

“Among off the shelf dairy products tested, butter had the highest heptadecanoic acid (423 mg/100g); nonfat dairy products had no detectable heptadecanoic acid.”

The research explains yet another reason why the modern tendency to move away from traditional healthy foods like milk…

…may be responsible for the common metabolic problems we are suffering from today.

“Humans’ movement away from diets with potentially beneficial saturated fatty acid heptadecanoic acid, including whole fat dairy products, could be a contributor to widespread low heptadecanoic acid levels, higher ferritin, and metabolic syndrome.”
