Beware this toxic food fungus

For years, we’ve been hearing about the dangers of antibiotic resistance

And how treatments that used to be wiped out easily by antibiotics now require stronger, and often more dangerous, treatments.

I think, in general, that we are using antibiotics in the wrong way.

But that’s an article for another day…

Something that we don’t hear about nearly as often as antibiotic resistance but that’s still a real threat, is antimicrobial resistance.

This is a resistance to the treatments that are used to treat fungal infections in people.

This study from the University of Georgia focuses on Aspergillus fumigatus, a fungus that can cause life threatening infections.

The study focused on Aspergillus fumigatus, the fungus that causes aspergillosis, a disease that causes life-threatening infections in 300,000 people globally each year.

Fungal infections are a major threat and kill a million and a half people every year, as well as create major crop damage.

Fungi can be a menace for both people and plants, causing over 1.5 million human deaths annually and crop losses of 20%.

It’s important to have a strong defense against fungus.

But our defenses are weakening because of how many anti-fungal treatments are used to produce our crops.

“Our results show that resistance to the compounds used to combat fungal infections in humans is developing in agricultural environments.”

Farmers and doctors use something called azoles to kill off fungal infections in plants and people.

The problem is that the use of azoles in farming is making fungal infections more resistant to this treatment in people.

“The samples that we collected in agricultural settings were resistant to both the azoles used in the environment and the clinical azoles used to treat people.”

And if people get one of these strains that’s resistant to agricultural azoles, it’s difficult to treat them.

“When they’re infected by a strain of the fungus that’s resistant to agricultural azole fungicide, the clinical azole ‘treatments’ used in health care are also ineffective.”

The people most at risk from these types of life threatening fungal infections are those that have weakened immune systems.

If you have a weakened immune system, you might want to stay away from compost piles where this type of fungus grows in higher concentrations.

“It’s not unusual to find A. fumigatus in the environment. It’s airborne, and it’s everywhere. Most people breathe it in without problem, but it can cause serious infections in people who have weakened immune systems.”

That means that a large part of keeping yourself healthy is to keep your immune system healthy and strong.

Keeping your immune system strong typically involves getting enough sleep, taking care of your gut health, and taking care of your metabolism.

If you are immunocompromised then you need to be very careful about exposure to potential fungal infections.

Typically, compost is a big source.

“Azole-resistant A. fumigatus is widespread in agricultural environments and especially things like compost,” said Michelle Momany, a corresponding author of the study and a professor of fungal biology in the Department of Plant Biology in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. “Someone who is immunocompromised and at risk for fungal infections should be very cautious in those settings.”

Humans are innovative and will probably overcome this problem…

But it’s naive to think that because a fungicide works now that it will continue to work.

Funguses like bacteria and viruses evolve so that they can reproduce and live.

They’ll try to get around the fungicides by adapting.

It’s up to us to do what we can to keep ourselves safe.
