Zinc is an essential nutrient found in small amounts in many foods.
Only a handful of foods, like oysters, provide large amounts of zinc.
Zinc is difficult to absorb.
As people get older, digestion tends to weaken, and so older people tend to absorb less zinc.
Because of this, zinc deficiency is extremely common in older people.
You may know that zinc has potent effects on hormones — it keeps testosterone high and helps to lower estrogen.
Numerous experiments have also shown that zinc is essential for optimal immune function.
Supplementing zinc in older animals helps to regenerate the thymus — perhaps the most important part of the immune system.
And human experiments have shown that supplementing zinc in the over 55 significantly lowers the risk of infection and keeps harmful inflammation under control.
These animal experiments were carried out at the University of Michigan. The findings were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
The thymus gland produces antibodies in response to infection.
These antibodies target pathogenic agents and help to fight off disease.
As humans and other animals age, the thymus gland tends to shrink.
As it shrinks, it loses its ability to produce antibodies.
The loss of thymic function is one of the reasons why older people are more susceptible to infectious disease.

A number of previous experiments have shown that optimizing zinc intake can help to regenerate the thymus in older animals.
This human study was designed to see whether supplementing zinc could lower the rates of infection in humans over the age of 55.
The researchers recruited 50 people for their randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
The participants were split into two groups.
One group was given a zinc supplement and the other was given an inactive placebo.
The study ran for 12 months.
Over that time the researchers took note of all incidents of infection.
They also looked at a number of different blood markers which give information about the function of the immune system.
“50 healthy subjects between the ages of 55 and 87 years were recruited for this study. The zinc-supplemented group received zinc gluconate 45 mg per day orally for 12 months.”
But before supplementation began, the researchers analyzed zinc levels in all of the participants of the study.
Their zinc levels were compared against younger adults.
The study group (of over 55’s) had significantly lower zinc levels compared to youngsters.
“Compared with a group of younger adults, at baseline the older subjects had significantly lower plasma zinc.”
The researchers found a significant difference between the two groups in terms of infection rate over the year-long study.
Over 55’s who took daily zinc supplements had significantly fewer infections.
“The incidence of infections was significantly lower in the zinc-supplemented group than in the placebo group.”
88% of participants in the placebo group were diagnosed with some sort of infection over the course of the year.
But only 29% of the participants in the zinc supplementation group were diagnosed with an infection in the same time period.
In the placebo group, 4% had four infections, 8% had three infections, and 24% had two or more infections over the course of the year.
None of the people who’d been taking zinc experienced more than one infection.
48% of the participants in the placebo group were given antibiotics — compared with only 8% of those taking zinc.
Upper respiratory tract infection is perhaps one of the most worrying possibilities for people in this age group.
Zinc supplementation halved the number of people diagnosed with respiratory tract infection (24% versus 12%).
These are fantastic results for a mineral that most older people are deficient in and which is relatively safe to use when done properly.
The study also showed a significant decrease in otherwise problematic inflammatory proteins.
These proteins are associated with an overactive immune response, something which is the cause of many disease symptoms.
“After zinc supplementation, the incidence of infections was significantly lower and the generation of inflammatory proteins was significantly lower.”
The study used 45mg of zinc per day.
This is a high dose which can cause some problems with hormones if taken for a long period of time.
For most people, this much zinc is probably a bad idea.
Between 10mg and 15mg of zinc per day is probably a good amount.
Zinc also needs to be balanced with copper, and many zinc supplements also include a little copper these days.
