This natural protein relieves chronic pain better than opiates

If you want to work out, you have to recover. Better recovery means you will build muscle and increase testosterone.

And yet, recovery from exercise or injury depends on a number of factors men often ignore.

For instance, proper nutrition is essential for optimal recovery.

And one nutrient in particular helps recovery…

The anti-inflammatory protein collagen may be one of the most helpful foods to aid recovery.

Collagen can help to rebuild damaged tissues. At the same time, it has an anti-inflammatory effect.

Recently, scientists looked at the effect of collagen on Achilles tendinopathy.

Collagen supplementation improved structure and reduced pain.

Oral supplementation of specific collagen peptides with calf-strengthening exercises enhances function and reduces pain in Achilles Tendinopathy Patients

The researchers carried out their research at the Department of Sport Medicine, Australian Institute of Sport. The journal Nutrients published the results.

The function of tendons is to attach muscles to bone.

The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body – it attaches to the bone at the heel.

Repeated pain and inflammation in the Achilles tendon is called Achilles tendinopathy.

A single injury or chronic overuse can cause this.

Runners are very familiar with it.

Achilles tendinopathy is notoriously difficult to treat.

“The treatment of chronic Achilles tendinopathy remains challenging with a relatively high percentage of non-responders.”

Collagens are proteins that are derived from the connective tissues of animals.

There is a lot of research showing that these proteins can accelerate healing.

So these researchers conducted a scientific study looking at the effect of collagen on Achilles tendinopathy in runners.

“We studied the clinical benefits of a specific hydrolyzed collagen supplement as add-on therapy to 6 months of an eccentric calf-strengthening and well-structured return to running program.”

The study used a daily 5 g dose of processed collagen: Tendoforte Gelita AG collagen.

“Participants were allocated to either 3 months of bi-daily 2.5 g hydrolyzed specific collagen peptides or a placebo product.”

For the first three months of the study, half of the participants got the collagen supplement.

“Group A received specific collagen peptides for the first 3 months before crossing over to placebo.”

For the second half of the study, they switched the groups – those who had been given placebo were now given the collagen supplement.

“Group B received placebo first before crossing over to specific collagen peptides.”

All the participants completed questionnaires about their degree of pain.

They completed these questionnaires before the study began, again at three months, and then again at the end of the study (six months).

The researchers used the VISA-A questionnaire to assess pain (a test designed for Achilles tendinopathy).

“At baseline, 3, and 6 and months, participants completed VISA-A questionnaires.”

The researchers also sent some of the participants from each group to ultrasound scans.

These scans looked for differences between the two groups that may indicate accelerated healing from collagen.

Over the first three months, the group given collagen had far greater improvements in pain.

“After 3 months, VISA-A increased significantly for group A with 12.6, while in group B VISA-A increased only by 5.3 points.”

When they switched the supplements at three months, the rate of improvement also changed between the groups.

The second group (now taking collagen) saw a greater decrease in pain.

“After crossing over, group A and B showed subsequently a significant increase in VISA-A of, respectively, 5.9 and 17.7.”

Pain decreased in both groups over time.

But those taking collagen had 2 to 3 times greater decreases in pain.

They primed the ultrasound scans look for microvascularity in the tendons.

This refers to a change in the blood vessels around the tendon area associated with Achilles tendinopathy.

“Microvascularity is associated with chronic (painful) tendon lesions.”

The scans showed that collagen improved microvascularity.

The decrease in pain was associated with improvements in microvascularity in the Achilles tendon.

“Microvascularity decreased in both groups to a similar extent and was moderately associated with VISA-A pain scores.”

These days, most people don’t eat much collagen.

But for most of human history, people would have eaten almost all of the animal.

Collagen has been a major part of the human diet for tens of thousands of years.

So, unsurprisingly, the collagen supplement had no adverse effects.

“No adverse events were reported.”

Most people could benefit from adding more collagen to their diet.

For specific injuries, the types of collagen used in this study might be particularly helpful.

You should always consult a healthcare practitioner about treating and diagnosing health-related problems.
