These days, many people believe that sugar is a cause of cancer.
“Cancer loves sugar” is what they are saying.
This idea has permeated mainstream media and even much of the scientific community.
It starts with the true observation that many cancers use a large amount of sugar.
People assume this means that sugar causes cancer. Or that by limiting sugar intake you can starve cancer.
These misunderstandings cause untold suffering and death…
Most recently, researchers showed that cancer cells develop just as rapidly when they do not use sugar.
The researchers carried out cell and animal experiments at the University of California Los Angeles. The journal Nature Communications published the results.
Cells can use fat or sugar to generate energy.
When using sugar to generate energy, they can do it in a few different ways.
Aerobic glycolysis is one way that cells can use sugar to generate energy.
And cancer cells tend to produce energy most predominantly by using sugar for aerobic glycolysis.
“Most tumors are characterized by increased glucose uptake and lactate production, a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect or aerobic glycolysis.”
Aerobic glycolysis fuels the growth of tumors.
Scientists believe that the byproduct of aerobic glycolysis (lactate) is one of the main reasons for this.
Previously, scientists discovered that blocking the production of lactate can significantly slow the progression of cancer.
“…moreover, reduction of lactate production, has been shown to impair the growth of tumor cells in vitro.”
The researchers conducted experiments on cancer cells well known to use aerobic glycolysis.
“These cells utilize aerobic glycolysis, and the activity of lactate dehydrogenase (Ldh) is essential for this cancer.”
The study’s authors wanted to find out if the enzyme that creates lactate in aerobic glycolysis is necessary for tumor development.
The researchers created a number of genetically modified cells from those original cancer cells.
Some of these cells had higher expression of the enzyme that creates lactate and some of the cells had this enzyme entirely removed.
The enzyme is key for the utilization of sugar in aerobic glycolysis.
Genetic removal of this enzyme caused the cells to use much less sugar.
“Lactate dehydrogenase null tumors significantly reduced glucose uptake.”
But the reduced use of sugar by the cells did not slow the growth of cancer.
“Genetic abrogation shows no effect on tumorigenesis as measured by number, time to formation, proliferation, gene expression, or immune response.”
All of the information gathered in this study shows that sugar is not necessary for cancer growth.
The cancer grew at the same rate regardless of sugar consumption.
And they confirmed the findings in genetically modified cells with high levels of the enzyme.
As expected, these cells used much more sugar.
Though those cells used more sugar, the development of cancer did not accelerate.
“Genetic induction also shows no effect on tumorigenesis.”
Increased sugar consumption is a symptom of cancer metabolism – not a cause.
What’s more, increased sugar consumption is not required for the progression of cancer.
When they deprived the cells of sugar, the cells simply switched to another fuel source – with no effect on tumor progression.
In this case, the cancer cells began to fuel their growth with an amino acid called glutamine.
“Tumors lacking the ability to use glucose take up glutamine to generate products necessary for increased biomass during proliferation.”
Glutamine is a very common amino acid found in many protein-rich foods.
The researchers want to conduct further experiments to see if limiting glutamine can slow cancer growth.
“It is possible that dual inhibition of both Ldh (lactate dehydrogenase) activity and glutamine uptake could potentially starve tumors by circumventing their metabolic flexibility.”
Contrary to current common wisdom, sugar reduction will not prevent cancer.
