Study on half a million people reveals shocking sugar secret

Many articles on the topic of diet and health claim that sugar is bad for us.

Some people go so far as to say we should avoid sugar from whole food sources such as fruit.

These claims are complete misunderstandings of nutritional science.

(Of course, sugar can be a problem when you drink gallons of it.)

A new study shows the massive and systemic health benefits of fresh fruit in the diet.

Fruit lowers blood pressure. Fruit lowers blood sugar.

And fruit significantly lowers the risks of major cardiovascular disease.

These researchers conducted their studies at a number of Chinese state universities for the China Kadoorie Biobank Study and published their results in the New England Journal of Medicine.

In the last few years, China has conducted a number of enormous population studies that look at the effect of different lifestyle factors on health outcomes.

[cmamad id=”19935″ align=”center” tabid=”display-desktop” mobid=”display-desktop” stg=””]

This one was the first of these studies to look at the fruit consumption in relation to the rate of cardiovascular diseases.

Stroke is a major problem in China.

“Little is known about the associations with fruit consumption and cardiovascular disease in China, where the consumption level is low and rates of stroke are high.”

The researchers analyzed data from a study that took place in 2004–2008.

The study included over half a million people from all across China.

“Between 2004 and 2008, we recruited 512,891 adults, 30 to 79 years of age, from 10 diverse localities in China.”

The study recorded major coronary events such as heart attack, strokes, and brain hemorrhages.

The study also looked at blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

The researchers analyzed those health outcomes against the dietary fruit intake of the participants.

Relatively few Chinese people reported eating fruit every day.

“Overall, 18.0% of participants reported consuming fresh fruit daily.”

The people who regularly ate fruit had lower blood pressure and lower blood sugar than those who did not.

“Those who ate fresh fruit daily had lower systolic blood pressure and blood glucose levels.”

People who ate fruit daily had a much lower risk of dying from a cardiovascular problem.

“The adjusted hazard ratios for daily consumption versus non-consumption were 0.60 for cardiovascular death.”

A hazard ratio of 0.6 equates to about 40% lower risk.

Fruit also seemed to be protective against stroke and nonlethal coronary events – leading to 25–35% lower risk of these events.

“The adjusted hazard ratios were 0.66 for incident major coronary events, 0.75 for ischemic stroke, and 0.64 for hemorrhagic stroke.”

More fruit seems to offer more protection.

“There was a strong dose-response relationship between the incidence of each outcome and the amount of fresh fruit consumed.”

The researchers saw the same results all across China and in all different groups of people.

“These associations were similar across the 10 study regions and in subgroups of participants defined by baseline characteristics.”

Some of the research centers used in the study were based in large cities.

And half of the research centers were in very rural areas.

“A higher level of fruit consumption was associated with lower blood pressure and blood glucose levels.”

The health benefits seen from fruit consumption in this study are very significant.

“Higher fruit consumption is associated with lower risks of major cardiovascular diseases.”

The study showed an extraordinary protective effect from consumption of fresh fruit.

These figures would be front-page news if this were a new Big Pharma chemical.

“We recorded a 40% lower risk of cardiovascular death and a 34% lower risk of major coronary events among participants who ate fresh fruit daily.”

A number of other studies have shown health benefits from fruit consumption.

Some people argue that the effects in those studies are not significant.

However, most of those studies did not specify fresh fruit only.

They also counted processed foods that included fruit-based products.

(And this confounded the results as processed foods are often unhealthy.)

But this particular study focused on fresh fruits, so it may be the most accurate assessment of the health effects of fruit.

“Unlike previous studies, we focused on fresh fruit, which is universally consumed raw in China, perhaps maximizing its potential benefits.”

Fruit contains healthy minerals such as magnesium and potassium, which may account for the protective effects in the study.

The fiber and polyphenol compounds are also associated with health benefits.

You should always consult a healthcare professional about diagnosing and treating health problems.
