On our television, in movies, on Instagram and Facebook… we constantly see images of impossibly fit and healthy people.

Ripped abs… tiny waists… long legs.

But in the supermarket, at the gym, and at work, it’s often a VERY different story. When we look around we see fat people.

Look… I’m not trying to be impolite or impolitic here.

It’s just the facts. The world is getting fatter and fatter.

But the question is why? AND what can we do about the ever-growing threat of weight gain in our lives?

We’ll look at what to do shortly… First, let’s take a look at what is happening and why.

It’s not in your head. We are a lot more fat than we’ve ever been.

Health scientists are starting to ring the alarm bells because globally we are getting more and more overweight all the time…

And now it’s starting to happen with our kids.

“The number of obese children and adolescents (aged 5 to 19 years) worldwide has risen tenfold in the past four decades.”

“The number of obese 5- to 19-year-olds rose more than tenfold globally, from 11 million in 1975 to 124 million in 2016. An additional 213 million were overweight in 2016 but fell below the threshold for obesity.”

And the challenge is not only that we’re getting fat but we aren’t getting our nutritional needs met either.

“The trend predicts a generation of children and adolescents growing up obese and also malnourished…”

This combination of being both fat and malnourished would have been incredibly difficult to achieve before the 1950s.

Now it’s ridiculously common – even in the United States.

But it does point to where the problem lies.

And this explosion is not limited to kids.

Adults are also gaining weight at an incredibly rapid pace…

…with six times more adults obese globally now than in 1975.

The number of obese adults increased from 100 million in 1975 (69 million women, 31 million men) to 671 million in 2016 (390 million women, 281 million men).

Another 1.3 billion adults were overweight but fell below the threshold for obesity.

So if you are struggling with weight, know you are not alone.

This is a global epidemic and the only way to fix it is to figure out what the cause is.

What happened around 1975 to cause an explosion of weight gain globally?

There are several factors here, but one of them is the incredible adoption of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in our diet.

Up until the late 1800s, most people ate butter or animal fats as their primary source of fat. And this is true throughout most of history.

But then something shifted, and we started eating this stuff called margarine.

In the United States, problems with supply coupled with changes in legislation caused manufacturers to switch almost completely to vegetable fats (oleomargarine) by 1950…

And the industry was ready for an era of product development.

This product development came at a time when the idea of fake food was embraced as innovation.

Everyone started eating all this new shelf-stable food that was filled with “good for you” vegetable oils and fats.

By the mid-1970s this trend had made its way to frozen TV dinners, Twinkies, and other highly processed products.

The farmers were in cahoots with the government and were more interested in making a profit than promoting health.

A very recent report from the Imperial College London and the WHO recommended:

“Countries should aim particularly to reduce consumption of cheap, ultra-processed, calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods.”

Which is basically saying that most things that are sold in a box are bad for you.

How to turn the odds in your favor.

If you’ve struggled with weight or just want to be healthier and have a body that functions better, the most important thing you can do now is to get rid of all PUFAs in your diet – or at least as many as possible.

PUFAs are a big part of what makes people gain weight.

PUFAs are EVERYWHERE.

Oils that are liquid at room temperature, shortening, most boxed and frozen foods – all are or contain PUFAs.

They are corn oil, soy oil, canola oil, and other vegetable oils and shortenings.

Instead, eat small amounts of butter and coconut oil.

Many people find that when they make the switch they start losing weight.
