Of course, the sun sets after a certain time, and there is no blue light on earth under normal conditions…
But this is not the case now.
With the development of technology, we are literally bombarded with blue light from everywhere.
Exposure to this blue light at night makes your body think it’s still morning and prevents your body from falling asleep.
Today’s study explains why:
Researchers conducted a light experiment with 12 people.
And they exposed them to BLUE and RED light at certain times of the day to see if light had an acute effect on hormones.
Then they took hormonal measurements and compared the results.
The production of Melatonin, which prepares the body for sleep, was DRASTICALLY reduced by blue light.
One-tail, post hoc paired student’s t-tests showed that melatonin levels were significantly higher at night than during the day for all three lighting conditions (D, R, and B), but at night melatonin levels were significantly lower following the blue light exposure than following both the dark condition and following the red light exposure condition.”
Moreover, the “stress hormone” cortisol did not decrease as much as it should have at night due to blue light.
How can a person who can’t wind down at night have a restful sleep? – they can’t.
“There were no significant differences in cortisol levels between the red and the blue lighting conditions and the dark condition during the day, but cortisol levels were significantly lower following the dark condition than following the blue light at night.”
Now, do you understand why so many people have trouble sleeping?
They are bombarded with blue light all night long. From TVs, computers, lightbulbs, cellphones, you name it.
What’s the solution?
To prevent blue light screwing up your sleep, you can:
- Reduce technological use at night
- Use blue-light-blocking glasses
- Download blue-light-blocking apps on your phone and computers, such as f.lux
- Change lightbulbs to red or deep amber ones
In conclusion, blue light at night is BAD. And it screws with your hormone production.
