Is Tokgkat ali safe for men who want to raise T and libido?

Tongkat ali is a versatile herbal remedy well known in its native Malaysia.

It is less well known in other parts of the world.

Some studies show that it can improve male sexual function, particularly “rockiness” problems.

Anyone outside of Malaysia who has heard of this herb has probably heard about this effect.

But tongkat ali has broader health benefits than just helping with “rockiness.”

Human studies have shown that it can reduce perceived psychological stress.

What’s more – hormonal testing proved that this is not simply a psychological effect.

Tongkat ali lowers the primary stress hormone, cortisol.

When cortisol goes down, testosterone usually goes up. And that’s the case with tongkat ali.

The findings explain why tongkat ali could improve male sexual performance.

But the hormonal changes prove that it has much wider (anti-aging) health benefits.

The human study was carried out by supplement researchers in Salt Lake City. The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition published the paper.

Tongkat ali is used to slow aging, improve libido, and boost sports performance.

“Tongkat ali roots are a traditional anti-aging remedy – and modern supplements are intended to improve libido, energy, sports performance, and weight loss.”

The researchers recruited 32 men and 32 women for this study.

The participants were recruited after responding to flyers looking for “moderately stressed” people.

They completed interviews and questionnaires that assessed their perception of psychological stress levels.

On top of this, the researchers took hormone samples to assess levels of the stress hormone cortisol and the anti-stress hormone testosterone.

“We assessed stress hormones and mood state in 63 subjects (32 men and 31 women) screened for moderate stress.”

The researchers gave the participants a supplement of tongkat ali or placebo for one month.

The tongkat ali was prepared as a standardized water extract.

“Participants were supplemented with a standardized hot-water extract of tongkat ali capsule or placebo for four weeks.”

The supplement consisted of 200 mg/day of Physta, Biotropics’ brand of tongkat ali.

Tongkat ali lowered many elements of psychological stress.

Tension, anger, and confusion all decreased after one month of tongkat ali supplementation.

“Significant improvements were found in the supplement group for tension (−11%), anger (−12%), and confusion (−15%).”

But the greatest benefit of tongkat ali was discovered in the hormone tests.

The hormone cortisol is necessary for basic human functions.

But elevated cortisol is a problem. For example, it’s strongly associated with obesity and low testosterone.

For most people, decreasing cortisol levels is beneficial.

Tongkat ali lowered cortisol by 16% in one month.

“Stress hormone profile was significantly improved by supplementation, with reduced cortisol exposure (−16%).”

Cortisol is often the mirror image of testosterone in men.

When cortisol is high, testosterone is usually low.

So it should be no surprise that lower cortisol came alongside increased testosterone.

One month of supplementation with tongkat ali boosted testosterone by an average of 37%.

“Salivary testosterone was significantly improved by tongkat ali supplementation with increased testosterone reaching +37%.”

High cortisol and low testosterone are often caused by the stresses of modern living. This hormone profile accelerates aging.

Things such as poor sleep, noise pollution, constant psychological stress, over-exertion, and a “modern diet” can contribute to this stress hormone profile.

Tongkat ali seems to be very protective against the stresses associated with modern living.

“Tongkat ali root improves stress hormones and mood state, suggesting it be an effective approach to shielding the body from the detrimental effects of “modern” chronic stress.”
