Does DHT hurt or help the prostate?

DHT is perhaps the most powerful male hormone.

It’s responsible for many of the masculine physical characteristics.

But DHT is also important for keeping inflammation low.

It helps to keep our metabolic rate high.

And DHT is now shown to lower the risk of many different types of chronic disease.

Yet many men believe that DHT is a problem.

Untold numbers of articles have been written claiming that DHT causes baldness and prostate problems.

These claims about the risks of DHT are untrue.

One way that we can show this is by looking at the effect of high-dose DHT supplementation in the prostate.

When men are given massive doses of DHT their blood levels of this hormone increase.

But DHT levels did not increase in the prostate.

The study showed no changes in the prostate when men took massive doses of DHT.

The human research was carried out at the University of Washington School of Medicine. The paper was published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Even though theories about the risks of DHT have been largely debunked over the last couple of decades, there is still a lot of fear around this hormone.

“Concern exists that androgen treatment might adversely impact prostate health in older men.”

DHT is made from its little brother, testosterone, and DHT is the main male hormone in the prostate gland.

“DHT is derived from local conversion of testosterone to DHT by 5α-reductase enzymes, and is the principal androgen within the prostate.”

Even with all the fear about DHT levels and prostate problems…

…no one had previously looked to see what the effect of increasing DHT had in the prostate.

“Exogenous androgens raise serum DHT concentrations, but their effects on the prostate are not clear.”

So these researchers designed a study to find out more.

“We determined the impact of large increases in serum DHT concentrations on intraprostatic androgen concentrations and androgen action within the prostate.”

They created a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial with 31 men between the ages of 35 and 55.

Some men were given a high-dose DHT gel, and others were randomly selected to get an inactive placebo gel instead.

“We compared daily transdermal DHT against placebo gel.”

The researchers looked for changes in DHT levels in the prostate as well as changes in gene expression which could indicate an increased risk of cancer.

“Main outcome measures are serum and prostate tissue androgen concentrations and prostate epithelial cell gene expression after 4 wk of treatment.”

The DHT gel is effective at increasing DHT levels in the blood.

There was a 7X increase in blood DHT levels in just 4 weeks in the men taking the active gel.

“Serum DHT levels increased nearly sevenfold, while testosterone levels decreased in men treated with daily transdermal DHT gel but were unchanged in the placebo-treated group.”

But there was no increase in DHT in the prostate of men taking DHT gel.

Nor was there an increase in testosterone in the prostate.

“Intraprostatic DHT and testosterone concentrations on d 28 were not different between groups.”

There were no changes which would indicate an increased risk of prostate inflammation, swelling or prostate cancer.

The researchers did not even find any difference in PSA levels.

The PSA (prostate specific antigen) is a general marker of prostate inflammation – the first port of call when assessing prostate health.

“Similarly, prostate volume, PSA, epithelial cell proliferation, and androgen-regulated gene expression were not different between groups.”

Massive increases in blood DHT levels have no effect on the prostate.

“Robust supraphysiologic increases in serum DHTdo not significantly alter intraprostatic levels of DHT, testosterone, or prostate epithelial cell androgen-regulated gene expression in healthy men.”

More and more research is showing the beneficial therapeutic effects of DHT in chronic health conditions.

It’s important to understand that supplemental DHT does not increase the risk of prostate problems.
