Feeling cold all the time? This is why

Body temperature is one of the most important indicators of overall health.

High body temperature means that you have a strong metabolism – provided that it does not come from stress hormones.

A strong metabolism makes your core and limbs warm.

Lower metabolism can lead to health problems like inflammatory diseases, auto-immune disorders etc.

In fact, human’s body temperature took a hit in the last century.

Researchers found that average body temperature dropped to 97.5°F (36.3°C)

It was 98.6°F (37°C) back in 1871.

This can be attested to a number of things, but the main reason is a lower metabolism rate.

So, in order to be healthier, it is crucial to increase body temperature.

Here are some ways to do this:

  • Boost thyroid function
  • Get more sun exposure
  • Incorporate movement in your life
  • Eat more pro-metabolic foods.

There is a common sense that fat people feel warmer.

After today’s newsletter, that will change.

This study was carried out in the University of Cambridge. It was published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

Actually, the researchers of this study were also thinking that fat mass is what makes humans feel warmer as well.

“We always thought that fat (acting as insulation) was the most crucial factor in thermoregulation, but it’s actually muscle playing the vital role.”

But after conducting the experiments, they found that MUSCLE mass is what makes us warm.

They recruited 114 volunteers from the city of Cambridge.

Before the experiment, they took their statistics, including body mass, fat mass, and muscle mass.

The researchers made volunteers plunge their hands into ice cold water for 3 minutes.

Then, they took the temperature of the hands of participants with thermal cameras.

They explain the reason that they chose hands for the experiment like this:

“Hands have a large surface area-to-volume ratio, which can be a challenge to maintaining thermal balance in cold conditions. We wanted to study the influence of body size and body composition on heat loss and rewarming in the hands to determine whether they affect hand temperature and dexterity in cold conditions”

The results were enough to contradict common sense…

The volunteers who had more muscle mass experienced less heat loss and their temperature recovered more quickly than the others.

Body or fat mass didn’t influence this.

“The current study demonstrated that absolute and relative muscle mass predict heat loss from the hands during severe cold exposure, while body mass, stature, and fat mass do not”

They found that having more muscle mass is a great way to protect yourself from cold.

“This demonstrates the importance of muscle mass as a thermogenic tissue to maintain extremity temperature; having significant muscle mass when carrying out manual tasks would be advantageous for maintaining thermal balance for populations residing in cold environments.

Exercising has many benefits.

It can improve your thyroid function, help manage weight, reduce the risk of disease, and strengthen bones and muscles.

It can even improve your ability to do everyday activities.

But this study revealed a unique benefit of building muscle mass.

If you are someone who feels cold all the time, you should incorporate weight training in your life.

Not only will it make you warmer, but it will also make you stronger, sexier, and better in bed as well.
