How to minimize the risk of stroke?

There is a condition called carotid atherosclerosis, which significantly increases the risk of stroke in men.

It occurs when the arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain become narrow or blocked due to plaque accumulation.

This plaque is made up of fat, and other substances that can build up on the inner walls of the arteries, causing them to harden and narrow.

This phenomenon happens when there is too much lipid peroxidation in the arteries.

Lipid peroxidation, in the most basic terms, means the degradation of fats in the body.

Pro-oxidant substances called free radicals attack fat cells and cause them to oxidize and rot.

These rotting fats accumulate in the vessels and clog them.

The most common causes of lipid peroxidation are:

  • PUFAs
  • Stress
  • Iron Overload

Today’s study focuses on the last marker on the list.

Iron overload.

Let’s take a look:

Iron overload started with the fortification of inorganic iron to the food supply.

It is often an overlooked condition.

You don’t hear much from doctors.

That’s why it keeps increasing secretly.

Iron is a very important mineral for our body, but too much of it can cause really serious problems.

One of them is the carotid atherosclerosis disease I mentioned above.

Because excess iron is a potent pro-oxidant and therefore leads to lipid peroxidation.

“Fe2+ released from tissue iron stores may accelerate lipid peroxidation by virtue of its pro-oxidant properties and thus promote early atherogenesis.”

Researchers in Italy, people over the age of 40 were followed for many years.

There were people who got sick, people who had strokes, people who had heart attacks, and even people who died.

Around 1000 subjects were monitored one by one by doctors at regular intervals.

They found a significant correlation between a certain marker in those who had an arterial blockage and stroke recurrence.

Yes, you guessed it.

Iron overload, or as these doctors call it, Elevated Serum Ferritin.

“Serum ferritin emerged as one of the strongest risk indicators of the overall progression of carotid atherosclerosis when the analysis was adjusted for baseline vascular status (atherosclerosis score), age, sex, risk attributes, and alcohol consumption.”

As you can see in the graph, people who have Ferritin levels above 50ng/mL are more likely to experience blockage of blood vessels to the brain.

The researchers also reported that smokers are more affected by iron overload.

Because smoking puts a serious oxidative load on the body, and when combined with iron overload, this oxidative load increases exponentially.

“Effects of iron stores on atherogenesis were more pronounced in smokers than in nonsmokers or former smokers”

The study found that men are also more affected by this malignant condition.

Mostly because men are more prone to iron overload than women.

“The incidence of carotid atherosclerosis in men was more than three times that of premenopausal women, with postmenopausal women in between.”

The possibility of iron overload can also increase with age.

So if you are over 40, I recommend you to check the iron levels in your body.

An iron panel blood, including Ferritin, Transferrin, Serum Iron, and TIBC tests, will be very useful.

If your iron levels are high, there are many ways to remove iron from your body.

Some of these are

  • Blood donations
  • Cut iron-fortified foods (this is a must)
  • Use iron blockers with meals like coffee and aspirin.

This way, you can get rid of the excess iron in your body…

… and reduce the risk of such diseases.
