How to easily prevent cognitive decline
20% of the whole world suffers from cognitive impairment.
People forget more, learn less, and they find it harder to concentrate.
By 2050, the number of people living with dementia is expected to triple.
That’s an ALARMING rate.
And what is the reason for this?
The MAIN CAUSE is inflammation, more specifically, neuroinflammation.
So why do people have more neuroinflammation?
According to research, here are the reasons:
- Sedentary lifestyle and obesity
- Low nutrition take
- Stressful environments
- An unhealthy diet that skyrockets inflammation
Today we are going to discuss people’s poor food choices.
Food is much more pro-inflammatory than it used to be.
In this study, an experiment was conducted to look at the relationship between pro-inflammatory diets and cognitive decline.
Let’s take a look:
This study was conducted at Zhouzhuang People’s Hospital, China. It was published in Frontiers in Nutrition.
A guide called the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) measures how food choices affect inflammation levels.
It’s based on how much a certain food increase inflammation markers in people’s bodies.
Simply put, If a food increases inflammation markers such as TNF and C-Reactive protein, it gets a higher point in this index.
“The dietary inflammatory index (DII) has been proposed to assess the inflammatory potential of the diet and is associated with systemic inflammatory markers including tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukins, and C-reactive protein.”
In this study, an experiment was conducted with about 3000 people over the age of 60.
These people were asked to keep a list of foods they ate, and researchers used this information to create a DII score – this went on for 4 years.
Then they carried out in-depth assessments which measured the subjects’ cognitive performance.
“Cognitive performance was assessed with four cognitive tests: the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease Word Learning (CERAD-WL) and Delayed Recall (CERAD-DR), and the Animal Fluency (AF) tests.“
The subjects eating more inflammatory foods performed poorly in assessments compared to others.
“Compared with participants in tertile 1 of DII scores, participants with higher DII scores showed a higher prevalence of lower cognitive functioning on DSST, CERAD-WL, and AF.”
In other words…
The higher the DII score (more inflammatory food), the higher the cognitive decline was.
“Findings suggested that higher DII scores were associated with a higher risk of cognitive impairment and declined memory function in older adults.”
Diet is a critical factor for cognitive performance – the foods you eat influence your brain.
That is, you should cut out pro-inflammatory foods and eat more anti-inflammatory foods.
Let me give you some examples:
Pro-inflammatory foods:
- PUFA-laden foods such as refined seed oils and fried food.
- Low-quality processed meats like hot dogs, bacon, etc.
- Packaged snacks, including chips, cookies, crackers, and pastries.
- Chemically sweetened beverages
Anti-inflammatory foods:
- Fruits such as blueberries and oranges
- High-quality dairy like grass-fed milk and cheese
- Grass-fed meat
- Wild-caught fish
- Healthy fats such as butter, olive oil, and coconut oil
- Cacao
If you make these changes, your cognitive performance will be on point.
