New discovery: blockbuster life-extending natural molecule

Longevity research is big business these days.

Big Pharma is looking for blockbuster molecules which could significantly extend the lifespan of humans…

It could make them a fortune.

But they are not having much luck – at least in terms of safe and patentable treatments.

On the other hand, the research has turned up some cheap and easily available supplements…

Supplements which significantly improve the lifespan of animals and probably improve the lifespan of humans too.

I have written before about the life extending properties of aspirin…

But this article is about another beneficial substance called glycine – an amino acid found in gelatin and collagen.

The animal research was carried out at Baruch College in New York. The paper was published in FASEB Journal.

Amino acids are small molecules which are the building blocks of protein.

One of these is called methionine – it is essential for growth but in excess it is toxic for older animals.

Restricting methionine extends the lifespan of small animals but it stunts their growth.

“Dietary methionine restriction extends lifespan in rodents by 30–40% and inhibits growth.”

Glycine is another amino acid and it is used by the liver to get rid of excess methionine.

“Glycine is the vehicle for hepatic clearance of excess methionine via glycine N-methyltransferase (GNMT)…”

The researchers wondered whether glycine could help bring about a balance of methionine…

Thereby extending lifespan without causing growth retardation

“…we hypothesized that dietary glycine supplementation might produce changes similar to methionine restriction and also extend lifespan.”

So the researchers carried out experiments on rats.

The rats were fed diets containing the same amount of methionine but differing amounts of glycine.

“Seven-week-old male rats were fed differing experimental diets.”

The diets all contained 0.43% methionine.

Diets also included:

2.3% glycine (control diet)

4%, or 8% or 12% glycine (high glycine diets)

Diets were maintained until the rats died of natural causes.

The researchers saw a significant increase in lifespan in rats on the high glycine diets.

“In 8% or 12% glycine supplemented rats, median lifespan increased from 88 weeks to 113 w.”

Average and maximum lifespans were massively increased when the animals had access to lots of glycine.

“In 8% or 12% glycine groups the maximum lifespan increased from 91 weeks in the control group to 119.”

The researchers found that there was a dose of glycine which caused maximum increase in lifespan…

And had no effect on growth.

Though the highest dose of glycine did cause a little reduction in growth in the animals.

“Body growth reduction was less dramatic, and not even significant in the 8% glycine supplementation group.”

The researchers also found differences in fasting blood sugar, insulin and triglycerides.

Other research has shown that glycine can improve these markers too.

“Glycine supplementation resulted in reductions in mean fasting glucose, insulin, and triglyceride levels, all decreased compared to controls.”

The researchers believe that glycine extends lifespan by helping to control the levels of methionine in the body.

It does this by acting on a liver enzyme called GNMT.

“We propose that more efficient methionine clearance via GNMT with glycine supplementation could be reducing chronic methionine toxicity due to rogue methylations from chronic excess methylation capacity or oxidative stress from generation of toxic by-products such as formaldehyde.”

So far, longevity research has shown that aspirin and glycine are likely the best candidates for significant life extension.

This is bad news for Big Pharma, but good news for the rest of us.

It is easy to buy purified glycine supplements these days…

But I think it best to get most of your glycine from anti-inflammatory proteins like gelatin and collagen.

Gelatin and collagen are approximately one quarter glycine by weight.
