How prediabetics are reversing their symptoms

A new study shows that even low-level physical activity can decrease the risk of diabetes in people with impaired fasting glucose levels (prediabetes).

The study was about finding out if physical activity could fight the growing diabetes epidemic in China.

Experts from the University of Birmingham carried out this human study in China.

This study looked at data from over 40,000 Chinese adults between the ages of 20 and 80 years.

The participants were both male and female (more men than women).

All of these people had impaired fasting glucose levels (diagnosed). That is a type of prediabetes.

Impaired fasting glucose means that the person’s fasting blood sugar levels are consistently above the normal range – but below the range for a diagnosis of diabetes.

Without intervention, impaired fasting glucose will lead to Type 2 diabetes.

It is also a risk factor for the heart and liver.

The study tracked the levels of physical activity of the participants over a period of 18 years.

Leisure-time physical activity was associated with a decreased risk of diabetes in people with prediabetes.

The study differentiated between physical work and exercise (or leisure-time physical activity).

“After the 18-year follow-up, we observed an inverse dose-response relationship between leisure-time physical activity and diabetes risk.”

They assessed leisure-time physical activity by means of a number of questionnaires.

These questionnaires looked at how much exercise the individuals got and how intense the exercise was.

“Activities fell under four categories: light (eg, walking), moderate (eg, brisk walking), medium vigorous (eg, jogging), and high vigorous (eg, running).”

In addition to intensity, the study looked at exercise duration.

The researchers used these two figures to classify leisure-time physical activity into four categories:

  • Inactive
  • Low volume
  • Moderate volume
  • High volume

With every increase in the level of physical activity, there was a corresponding decrease in diabetes risk.

“Diabetes risk in individuals reporting low, moderate, and high-volume exercise was reduced by 12%, 20%, and 25%, respectively.”

If changes in blood glucose levels are assessed early – when the levels are “prediabetic” – then 25% of diabetes cases could be avoided.

Low-level physical activity such as walking could prevent diabetes in 1 in 8 people.

Just getting the amount of physical activity recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) could prevent one in five cases of diabetes.

“19% of incident diabetes cases could be avoided if the inactive participants had engaged in WHO recommendation levels of physical activity.”

According to the study, a moderate amount of physical exercise could prevent 7 million cases of diabetes in China alone.

“This would correspond to a potential reduction of at least 7 million diabetic patients in the Greater China area.”

Changes in blood sugar levels are independent risk factors for heart disease and other cardiovascular problems.

“Persistent dysglycemia driven by insulin resistance leads to endothelial dysfunction and vascular complications.”

Every year, a significant number of people diagnosed with impaired fasting glucose (prediabetes) crosses that threshold into Type 2 diabetes.

“6–9% of individuals with impaired fasting glucose/prediabetes progress to diabetes…”

Previous studies showed that a combination of exercise and proper diet can have a huge effect on minimizing the risks associated with impaired glucose tolerance.

But this large study showed the impressive effect of exercise alone.

“In individuals with impaired glucose tolerance, a diet, and physical activity intervention program has been shown to reduce the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular mortality by 45% and 41%.”

Physical activity should be a part of everyone’s weekly routine for a healthy life.

Even low-level activities such as walking can lower the risk factors associated with Type 2 diabetes and many other diseases.
