Is olive oil really healthy, or not?

I write a lot about fats – about the benefits of saturated fats like butter, coconut oil and dairy fat.

And also the risks of polyunsaturated fats like canola, soybean, etc.

But between those two categories of fats lies another category – monounsaturated.

Here, things are a little more nuanced…

Olive oil is primarily monounsaturated.

It has some polyunsaturated fats, which means that consumption of large amounts of olive oil is probably a bad thing.

But olive oil also contains plant compounds which can have profound effects on your health.

Research shows that consuming a little bit of high quality olive oil could help to strengthen your bones.

The cell experiments were carried out at the University of Granada in Spain. The paper was published in PLoS One.

The researchers were interested in chemicals produced by olive plants called phenolic compounds.

They wanted to see whether they had an effect on bone growth by altering bone cells called osteoblasts.

“In this study, we aimed to clarify the effects of phenolic compounds and extracts from different extra virgin olive oil on osteoblast cell proliferation.”

The study showed that many of the olive oil compounds had a significant effect on osteoblasts.

Common phenolic compounds from olive oil can increase bone growth by up to 16%.

“Cell proliferation was increased by hydroxytyrosol, luteolin, apigenin, p-coumaric, caffeic, and ferulic acids by approximately 11-16%, as compared with controls that were treated with one vehicle alone.”

The researchers looked at numerous olive oil compounds on their own and in combination.

The combination of these compounds (as found in olive oil) was more effective than any one compound alone.

“All phenolic extracts stimulated osteoblast cell growth, and they induced higher cell proliferation rates than individual compounds.”

They found that some types of olive oil are more potent at promoting bone health.

Extra virgin olive oil from Picual olives seems to be almost twice as effective at increasing the growth of bone cells.

EVOO = Extra virgin olive oil

Something very important for older people who lose bone mineral density.

“The most effective EVOO phenolic extracts were those obtained from the Picual variety, as they significantly increased cell proliferation by 18-22%.”

Olive oil from plants picked at the earlier part of the harvest season is very beneficial…

Far more than oils made from olives taken later in the harvest season.

“A decline in osteoblast proliferation was observed in oils obtained from olive fruits collected at the end of the harvest period, as their total phenolic content decreases at this late stage.”

The researchers called for further investigation into the phenomenon.

They point to the fact that extra virgin olive oil could be a big player in protecting bone health and driving down the rates of osteoporosis.

“Further research on the signaling pathways of olive oil phenolic compounds involved in the processes and their metabolism should be carried out to develop new interventions and adjuvant therapies using EVOO for bone health (i.e.osteoporosis) in adulthood and the elderly.”

Osteoporosis is a major problem for older people – leading to brittle bones, falls, and assisted living…

As well as the use of harmful treatments to treat pain.

Osteoporosis can take years of your life.

Getting adequate calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin K2 are the most important things for bone health.

But this research shows that a spoonful of high quality, early harvest olive oil may also bring significant benefits for bone health.
