One of the causes of erectile dysfunction in men is poor metabolism which leads to stress in the body.
And it may be the biggest cause of ED.
When I say stress in the body, I don’t mean stress from being unemployed, or having your boss yell at you.
Sure, that could lead to bodily stress, but it’s not the stress I’m talking about here.
What I mean by stress in the body is a decline in youthful sex hormones and youthful metabolism.
The body begins fighting stress and inflammation “fires” all over.
How do you know you have stress in the body?
If you have high blood pressure or you’re tired all the time, you have stress in the body.
Or if you have ED or you’re taking various medications, you have stress in the body.
Most people think that these are the issues that need they need to treat — the blood pressure, tiredness, ED, and medical issues.
So they have stress and erectile dysfunction and other issues that they’re coping with all at the same time.
But what you should focus on is reducing the stress in the body that is CAUSING these other issues.
Stress in the body leads to high cortisol levels.
And having high cortisol levels causes many other issues.
Anyone with Diabetes Type II, high blood pressure, belly fat that won’t go away, or low T, has stress in the body.
If you have some or even all of these, you have chronic stress in the body that causes your other problems.
Sometimes this is called sterile inflammation because it causes inflammation without there being germs present in the body.
It’s also sometimes known as oxidative stress.
We’ll just call it, stress in the body.
In this article, researchers found that men with ED have high cortisol levels.
And this high cortisol seems to cause erectile dysfunction.
They had men (who are very brave volunteers) stimulate themselves to erection.
Then they measured cortisol and stress hormone levels.
In the healthy volunteers, cortisol serum levels significantly decreased with increasing sexual arousal, when the flaccid penis became rigid.
This finding is pretty important.
If you’re having good sex, your cortisol levels should reliably fall before and during sex.
And they should stay low afterward.
Sex is really good for your body because it lowers your cortisol levels.
But what about volunteers who have stress in the body?
What about volunteers who have type II diabetes, a lot of belly fat, or high blood pressure?
That’s where this next study comes in to help explain things.
This second study worked with volunteers with erectile dysfunction.
The researchers treated the volunteers with a chemical found in the body called prostaglandin E1.
They found that it resulted in the volunteers responding even more poorly to sexual stimulation.
Their erections were even worse.
The worst men were men who were “high stress” guys, or guys going through a lot of life stress (situational stress).
The high inhibition group showed a profile of higher initial cortisol.
Chronically high cortisol can lead to very poor or non-existent erections.
Cortisol levels peak in the early morning but so does testosterone.
In men who have chronic stress in their body, their cortisol peaks but their testosterone doesn’t peak.
Testosterone is very low, and cortisol is very high.
Now guess what?
What you eat can cause stress in your body and therefore cause ED.
If you’re eating a lot of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) those PUFAs turn into prostaglandin E1 in the body.
And these are extremely common in the Western diet — and ED is extremely common in Western men.
If you look at the study that I just showed you, to reduce erections, researchers used prostaglandin E1 injections.
Prostaglandin E1 is one of the stress chemicals produced when your body is stressed inside.
The body builds it from the polyunsaturated fatty acids in your diet.
If you reduce the PUFAs in your diet, your body will produce less prostaglandin E1.
As these studies show, this may very well increase your erectile response.
With that, what should you do now?
First, test everything that you do for your metabolism and your health against its effect on cortisol.
It’s not a matter of just lowering cortisol in your body.
Plenty of nutritional changes and supplements do that.
It’s a matter of eliminating that stress in your body.
This lowered stress will lead to cortisol levels naturally falling because your body is going through less stress.
And you need to eliminate foods that cause high cortisol or high prostaglandins, such as PUFAs, vegetable oil, fish oil, etc.
These nutritional changes then lead to higher testosterone and lower cortisol rates.
This, in turn, will lead to better morning wood and regular erections whenever you want.

Men taking glipizide frequently have erectile dysfunction. There are two reasons for this.
Number one, men who have type two diabetes often experience erection problems over a long period of time. This causes of diabetes are internal inflammation and these causes often result in many symptoms including erectile dysfunction. So it is not necessarily true that the drug specifically is causing erectile dysfunction in men.
But another reason for glipizide men frequently having erectile dysfunction is that the drug stimulates additional insulin. Additional insulin seems to cause men to have erection problems.
It’s difficult to get confirmation that glipizide causes erectile dysfunction, because very rarely are cases of erectile dysfunction reported to the FDA. Most of the time men already are having erection problems and they don’t blame the glipizide even if it is responsible.
2. Does metformim cause erectile dysfunction?
Metformin does not seem to directly cause erectile dysfunction. However, metformin essentially poisons the energy-producing parts of the cell called mitochondria. The mitochondria become unable to burn fuel as efficiently. Metformin can suppress cellular energy and depress the body’s ability to produce testosterone.
For a man to produce healthy levels of testosterone, DHT and other necessary male hormones, his cells have to be operating in a high energy level. Metformin can depress energy levels in the cell and depressed metabolism. And a depressed metabolic state makes it difficult for a man to get good erections.
In addition, metformin seems to affect the body’s ability to make vitamin B12, which can result in peripheral neuropathy symptoms very similar to diabetic neuropathy. And this neuropathy can also present itself as numbness in the penis and a lack of feeling. This makes erections more difficult to sustain.
3. What are some of the causes of high cortisol?
Diabetics almost always have high cortisol levels. So what causes high cortisol is internal inflammation in the body, especially gut inflammation and gut problems.
High cortisol levels are also the result of chronically low blood sugar. Many diabetics find that their blood sugar dives down at night. When blood sugar falls, cortisol is secreted in order to maintain blood sugar at all costs. The cortisol depresses testosterone levels and makes it difficult for men to sustain a good direction.
High cortisol levels are also caused by chronic inflammation from the gut, certain medications, and lack of quality sleep.
