Men: Here’s how to prevent prostate cancer before it starts

If you’re a man over the age of 50 or 60, it’s likely that, if you HAVEN’T experienced prostate problems yet, you will soon.

It seems to be a “design flaw” in men because of the fact that prostate problems are incredibly common.

Let’s face it, if you do have prostate problems – even mild ones – it’s a big pain.

An enlarged prostate can make you have to pee all the time and can keep you from getting a good night’s sleep.

And, while an enlarged prostate is mostly a nuisance, prostate cancer can, in some circumstances, be life-threatening.

The big problem is that when guys hear the word “cancer,” their first reaction is “get it out.”

That can be the COMPLETELY wrong thing to do.

But the reaction though is understandable… Cancer is SCARY.

But… In many cases, removing prostate cancer can cause more harm than good.

Because most prostate cancer is slow-growing and doesn’t really hurt you, many men in their hurry to “get it out” end up getting unnecessary, expensive treatments…

And these treatments can leave them with lifelong erectile dysfunction and urinary problems.

“A recent study showed that more than 25 men were being unnecessarily treated with surgery or radiotherapy, for every single life saved.”

Most prostate cancer is NOT super-aggressive.

It grows slowly and often never leaves the prostate.

This type of cancer can be watched with no intervention unless necessary – which is a MUCH better option for many men because it often preserves their sexual function.

The problem is that some types of prostate cancer ARE very aggressive.

And these types need to be treated more aggressively.

But, until now, there was no reliable way to tell the more aggressive and less aggressive types apart.

So many men and their doctors opt for more aggressive treatment than is necessary, leading to all the nasty side effects.

There is a new test to screen for aggressive prostate cancer.

This is a very exciting breakthrough.

A team in Canada and the UK found a test that can tell life-threatening prostate cancers from slower-growing “watch and wait” types.

“A team at the University of York (UK) and the University of British Columbia (Canada)…have designed a test that can pick out life-threatening prostate cancers, with up to 92% accuracy.”

This screening could allow thousands of men to avoid debilitating surgeries so they’ll have far fewer negative side effects…

And that’s a really big deal.

“Cancers that are contained in the prostate, however, have the potential to be ‘actively monitored’ – which is not only cheaper, but has far fewer negative side effects in patients with non-life-threatening cancer.”

These tests allow doctors to look inside the cells to see which genetic switches are turned on and off.

This allows them to determine if the cancer is really dangerous or if it can be monitored instead of being treated aggressively.

“Using this computer analysis, not only could we see which tissue samples had cancer and which didn’t, but also which cancers were dangerous and which ones less so.”

Unfortunately, this advanced screening technique is not available to the general public quite yet.

The people who developed this innovative technique are working on rolling it out in the UK right now.

“To take this method out of the laboratory, the team are now investigating a further trial with new cancer samples, and hope to involve a commercial partner to allow this to be used for patients being treated in the National Health Service.”

But even though the technique is not widely available yet, it’s important to understand that most prostate cancer is not super-aggressive…

And for many men, an active monitoring approach is a better bet than surgery or radiation.

Of course, I’m not a doctor and I can’t tell you how to treat prostate cancer (or not to treat prostate cancer).

But you should always understand the risks and benefits of treatment before you let a doctor cut you open – especially if it’s your reproductive tract.

The advances in cancer treatment that are coming out are stunning.

But it’s even better to prevent cancer before it starts.

If you have an enlarged prostate that puts you at higher risk for developing cancer, there are ways to help shrink it naturally.
