Foods with this 1 ingredient often cause IBS

If you have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), then you know that it can make your life pretty miserable.
The symptoms of IBS are long term and can cause chronic diarrhea or constipation.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common, long-term condition of the digestive system.
Symptoms can include stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and/or constipation.
The condition is often lifelong, although the symptoms may change over time.
With the right strategies, IBS can be successfully managed.
Doctors aren’t sure what causes IBS, but recent studies have shed some light on potential causes…

Red food dye can cause IBS by disrupting the gut barrier and increasing the production of serotonin in the gut.
Researchers found that continual exposure to Allura Red AC harms gut health and promotes inflammation. The dye directly disrupts gut barrier function and increases the production of serotonin, a hormone/neurotransmitter found in the gut, which subsequently alters gut microbiota composition, leading to increased susceptibility to colitis.
This is both alarming and makes me incredibly mad.
This type of red dye is in SO MANY foods that are sold as “safe” in the supermarkets.
UGH.
I don’t eat foods with dyes anyway, but if I had IBD I would definitely stay away from foods with dyes.
They aren’t going to make the condition better and they are probably going to make it worse.
People with IBS also tend to have less biodiversity in their gut microbiomes.
In other words, there are less types of bacteria in the gut of someone who suffers with IBS in comparison with someone who has a healthy gut.
The researchers found that the gut bacterial community is less diverse in IBS patients than in healthy people, said Shim. Additionally, the abundance of 21 bacterial species differed between IBS patients and healthy controls.
A healthy human gut has a huge number of types of bacteria — and if everything is in balance, those bacteria work to help keep us healthy. Our systems are complicated and they rely on eating the right types of foods to stay healthy.
Normally, “More than 10,000 species of microorganisms live in the human intestine,” said corresponding author Jung Ok Shim, M.D., Ph.D., professor of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, Department of Pediatrics, Korea University College of Medicine, Seoul.
When the gut bacteria gets disrupted, then symptoms of IBS can emerge.
Disruption of the microbiome of the human gastrointestinal tract can trigger IBS. Typically, IBS causes bloating, diarrhea, and stomach pain or cramps.
Personally, I think this is good news.
If we know that red food dye and lower biodiversity of gut bacteria contribute to IBS, then it gives us more of an ability to treat the causes of IBS.
I go over a lot of what I’ve discovered about how you can potentially heal your gut in the Gut Health Transformation.
I’ve seen people with IBS and even Chron’s completely alleviate their symptoms.
It’s possible that you don’t have to live with IBS or other major bowel or stomach problems.
But if you want to get rid of them, you usually do have to “be in charge” of your own health.
And that’s completely up to you.
