Today we are going to explore this topic.
Most of us drink coffee, right?
I regularly present you with studies that talk about the benefits of coffee.
Today’s case is a little bit different…
I like drinking coffee not just because I enjoy the taste but more for strategic purposes.
For me, coffee is more like a “medicine” than just a drink.
One of these strategies is to drink coffee as a “pre-workout”, that is, before training.
Why?

This human study was conducted at the University of Birmingham. It was published in the journal of Applied Physiology.
Caffeine, the most notorious component of coffee, was used to boost energy in exercise.
Previous research has reportedly shown that caffeine intake before exercise reduces fatigue and increases endurance.
“It is well established that carbohydrate (CHO) feeding during prolonged exercise can postpone fatigue and enhance endurance capacity.”
So, the researchers of this study wanted to combine caffeine with sugar to see its effect on exercise.
To do this, they recruited 8 elite male athletes as volunteers.
They subjected them to 2 hours of exercise and gave them a combination of glucose and caffeine right at the beginning of the training.
Their goal was to see if caffeine would improve the breakdown of glucose.
The dosage of this mixture was 100 grams of glucose and 5mg of caffeine per kilogram, so roughly 2 cups of coffee for the average man.
The first thing they found was that caffeine increased CO2.
“In the Glu and Glu+Caf trials, there was a significant increase in the CO2 enrichment of expired breath, reaching an enrichment difference of 8‰.”
Then, the results showed that caffeine also significantly increased carbohydrate oxidation rate.
“In Glu+Caf, peak exogenous CHO oxidation rates were reached at the end of exercise (120 min) and were significantly higher than peak exogenous CHO rates in Glu.”
This means that athletes utilized the energy source that they ate better.
They needed fewer internal resources, so they had a more efficient workout.
“When ingested during exercise, moderate doses of caffeine in combination with a CHO solution significantly improved 1-h cycling time trial performance compared with the ingestion of water placebo or CHO alone.”
The point is caffeine makes workouts better.
That’s why I always drink my coffee before my weightlifting session.
It makes a big difference in comparison to when I don’t.
Because when I do, I’m noticeably less tired and lift heavier.
