My mother always told me, “You are what you eat.”

You’ve probably heard that saying as well.

Throughout my journey working to heal myself from several severe and chronic conditions, I’ve found that what I eat makes a huge difference in my health and ability to be healthy.

The problem is that the current food supply and cultural eating habits don’t support healthy eating for most people.

This leads to lots of unnecessary disease, pain, and suffering.

When it comes to eating, it’s important to pay attention to nutrients.

One nutrient that DRAMATICALLY affects health is choline.

One of the best sources of choline is egg yolk.

The consumption of natural choline from egg yolk phospholipids improved choline absorption compared to consumption of chemically produced choline bitartrate. Apparently, the matrix in which choline is consumed is important for its uptake.

Eggs can be very healthful for your body, but only if you eat the WHOLE egg and not just the whites.

The egg white fad makes me crazy. It’s just not good for you.

In fact, your body will absorb choline much better from egg yolk than if you take supplemental choline.

However, if you are a vegan or a vegetarian you may need to take supplemental choline to make sure you get enough of this vital nutrient.

In a mouse study from Arizona State University, researchers found that choline plays critical roles in having a healthy metabolism.

Further, the study illustrates that choline deficiency in mice causes significant weight gain, and alterations in glucose metabolism, (which are tied to conditions such as diabetes), and deficits in motor skills.

A healthy metabolism is important, because your metabolism largely contributes to your overall health.

If you have a healthy metabolism, you are far less likely to get diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and other chronic health conditions.

The link between metabolism and choline is one of the reasons that the egg white trend (eating only whites and not the yolks) makes me CRAZY.

Most people skip the yolks because they are trying to lose weight or be healthy.

It doesn’t work that way!

Not eating egg yolks = not enough choline.

Not enough choline = metabolic problems.

Metabolic problems = potential diabetes and cardiovascular issues.

Seriously… some of the “popular” health advice out there is just a big fat mess.

In addition to metabolic problems, if you are deficient in choline you might end up with liver damage and have a higher likelihood of getting Alzheimer’s disease.

Dietary choline deficiency results in liver damage, enlargement of the heart and neurologic alterations in the AD mice typically accompanying Alzheimer’s disease.

The researchers note that most people don’t get enough choline in their natural diets.

They also note that the current requirements for dietary choline are probably not enough.

“First, people don’t reach the adequate daily intake of choline established by the Institute of Medicine in 1998. And secondly, there is vast literature showing that the recommended daily intake amounts are not optimal for brain-related functions.”

Here’s the thing…

I eat an egg or two on most days because egg yolks are a wonderful dietary source of choline.

I know that choline is a protective nutrient and I like eggs, so that makes eating eggs an easy choice.

Getting the RIGHT nutrients in your diet can have a hugely positive impact on your health.

But there is a ton of misinformation out there about what the right nutrients are.
