It may appear safe — but it’s leeching poison into your food!

Don’t let this come into contact with your food
I’m going to put this bluntly…
The plastics that are everywhere in our environment are poisoning us…
…especially the plastics that come into contact with our foods.
A recent study from McGill University has found that Canadians are being exposed to toxic chemicals called Bisphenol A (BPA) and Bisphenol S (BPS) through their food, particularly fresh produce.
BPA is a toxic chemical linked to prostate and breast cancer, commonly found in plastics, the lining of food cans, water bottles, and paper receipts.
While steps were taken in Canada to reduce the use of BPA, it has been replaced with similar hormone-disrupting chemicals like BPS.
In the US, BPA isn’t banned, but it is restricted in many products… but BPS is also still widely used in food packaging and related products.“BPA is a chemical that can interfere with hormones in the human body and cause adverse health outcomes, including cancers, diabetes, and damage to fertility and the development of infants. Now there is growing evidence that BPS may have similar health effects.”
The big problem with these chemicals is that BPS leaches from food packaging INTO the foods that we are eating.
Because these are hormone disrupting chemicals the negative results aren’t immediate, but happen over the long term.
That makes the damage hard to track.
These chemicals aren’t going to kill anyone instantly but can do major damage over the long term.
Every day, people in North America are exposed to BPS in the fresh foods they eat, as chemicals migrate from labels on the packaging materials into the food.
The study found that BPS is present in fresh produce, which means that every day people are being exposed to these toxic chemicals through their diet.
This is a cause for concern as BPS has been linked to similar health problems as BPA, such as hormone disruption and cancer.
“Our study provides evidence, for the first time, that BPS and alternative chemicals found in food labels migrate through packaging materials into the food people eat.”
Now… I’m not saying to take fresh fruit out of your diet.
It’s still one of the healthiest things you could possibly eat. What I am saying is that you should do your best to buy whole and unpackaged foods and to never ever heat foods in plastic containers. Also, cling wrap is less problematic than food labels when it comes to leaking chemicals into your body.
Printed labels have the most of the BPS chemicals.
But they are also just about everywhere!
They found relatively high concentrations of BPS in thermal food labels, like price tags and stickers, where heat is used to print bar codes or unit prices. In contrast, they found little to no BPS in plastic wrapper films, pads, and trays.
The study’s findings are a cause for concern, as exposure to BPA and BPS has been linked to a range of health problems, including hormone disruption, cancer, and developmental problems in children.Choosing fresh, unpackaged foods and avoiding plastics, especially those with recycling codes 3 and 7, can help reduce exposure to BPA and BPS.
Personally, I try to buy as much whole, fresh, unpackaged produce as possible.
I’m lucky to live in areas with easy access.
When I don’t have access to fresh fruit, I do buy it frozen and cook it, but I always remove it from the plastic and cook it in a glass, metal, or ceramic container.
You can’t avoid all plastics, but you can take steps to keep them out of your food consumption as much as possible.
