I’ve been telling you about the evils of nitric oxide for a while.
Hopefully, it’s led to some great discussions with your doctor about alternatives to nitric oxide.
The nitrite and nitrate health effects are dire, the side effects of nitrates and nitrites affect you in ways you didn’t realize.
But medications aren’t the only place you get nitric oxide.
You can also get it through diet, you can find nitrates and nitrites in foods.
Even some supplements will raise your nitric oxide.
Supplements that contain L-arginine and celery seed, in particular, are a problem.
So we’re going to talk about the nitrates and nitrites in your diet, and how to avoid them.
Hint: you’re going to want to read the labels on whatever you’re taking from now on.
There are three main sources of nitrite and nitrate.
The first is vegetables that are grown with high nitrate fertilizer — especially leafy greens like spinach.
The second is cured meats that have sodium nitrate or nitrite in them.
So cured meats lower testosterone levels.
The third is male health and other nutritional supplements that are high in nitrites or nitrate.
And sometimes the nitrites or nitrates are in disguise.
Now that you know how you could be eating nitrates and nitrates, let’s look at this study.
The study was done with mice, but the results are just as true for humans.
And this study is yet another nail in the coffin for one class of ED medications — PDE-5 inhibitors.
PDE-5 inhibitors are medications that raise nitric oxide to give men erections.
You may recognize some of the names of these drugs: Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra.
These drugs raise nitric oxide, which causes a lot of harm in the body.
The nitric oxide damages the testicles and harms the entire hormone system — especially testosterone and other male hormones.
The reason for all this damage has to do with how the cells treat nitric oxide.
Each cell contains at least one energy factory called mitochondria.
There can be a thousand mitochondria or more in just one cell, especially in muscle cells.
But mitochondria are not just the energy producers, they are also chemical producers in the cells.
For example, in the Leydig cells in the testicle, mitochondria may be producing steroid hormones such as testosterone and DHT.
Now, nitrates and nitrites basically turn into nitric oxide.
So it’s important to know that nitric oxide binds with the enzymes in the mitochondria.
And nitric oxide inhibits the production of steroids including testosterone, DHT, etc.
Nitrite and nitrate are metabolized to nitric oxide, which binds heme in cytochrome P450 enzymes, thereby inhibiting production of steroid hormones.
Therapeutic nitrates likewise may decrease adrenal and testicle steroid production.
In that dry language, you can see the dangers of nitrates, nitrites, and nitric oxide.
Anything involving nitrates, nitrites, or the PDE-5 inhibitors are going to be very bad for testosterone production.
And they’re bad for all of the steroids that our body needs to have a good metabolism.
It’s important to realize that some of this damage is irreversible.
That means that once the nitrate or nitrite binds to the mitochondria, the molecules will never release their nitric oxide.
And unless they let go of the nitric oxide, those cells will never again be able to produce the steroids they are supposed to produce.
The decrease in corticosterone and testosterone levels in the treated animals may also have involved the production of nitric oxide in adrenals and testes.
This study was done before the PDE-5 inhibitors became really big.
And it shows why they should have been discouraged instead of handed out as routine treatment.
The study results are very sound.
And there have been many other studies showing the tremendous damage that these drugs do.
But we should be aware that nitric oxide from any source is very harmful to our bodies and best avoided.
This includes medication, cured meats, or vegetables grown with high nitrate organic fertilizer.
It’s also important to know that the dosages used in these studies were not huge doses.
They’re comparable to those that a person would get who is not trying all that hard to avoid them.
So it’s important to remove these sources from your diet and your medicine cabinet.
