Avoid washing down your tablets with this kind of juice

Did you know that taking certain treatments with grapefruit juice or eating grapefruit can be dangerous?

It’s a weird interaction, but it’s also true!

One of the treatments that’s dramatically affected by grapefruit juice is statins.

Statins are given to lower cholesterol levels.

When you take statins with grapefruit juice, the levels of the treatment in your bloodstream can increase unexpectedly, leading to adverse reactions.

If you’ve read a lot of my work then you know that I’m not a big fan of statins. I think they cause far more harm than good.

But regardless of what I think about these treatments you need to know about this potentially dangerous interaction if you take them…

…because your pharmacist or doctor isn’t likely to tell you.

In fact, they may not even know about the problems with grapefruit juice and statins!

Statins such as atorvastatin, lovastatin, and simvastatin can interact with grapefruit juice.

Compounds in grapefruit inhibit an enzyme in your digestive tract that breaks down these treatments.

This means that blood levels of the treatments will be higher than expected, which can lead to serious side effects.

A daily glass of grapefruit juice increases blood levels of simvastatin and lovastatin by about 260% if taken at the same time (about 90% if taken 12 hours apart), and atorvastatin by about 80% (whenever taken).

Research has shown that taking atorvastatin with grapefruit juice increases blood levels by about 80%…

…while simvastatin and lovastatin are increased by 260%!

To me, these numbers are CRAZY.

They mean that when you drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit and take these treatments…

…you could have 2 to 4 times the amount in your system than what the doctor ordered!

Considering that the side effects of statins can include memory problems, inflammation of the liver, skin problems, sexual problems, and muscle problems…

…I think that having extra of these treatments in the bloodstream is extremely problematic!Statins have even been linked to the development of diabetes.

Some research has found that using statins increases blood sugar because statin use can stop your body’s insulin from doing its job properly. This can put people who use statins at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Although some researchers suggest that the reductions in cholesterol and heart disease risk are greater than the harm of boosting the dose with grapefruit juice…

…I personally think this is a very stupid approach to lowering cholesterol.

Because these chemicals are innate to grapefruit, all forms of the fruit (freshly squeezed juice, frozen concentrate and whole fruit) have the potential to reduce the activity of CYP3A4. One whole grapefruit or 200 mL of grapefruit juice is sufficient to cause clinically relevant increased systemic ‘chemical’ concentration and subsequent adverse effects.

The bottom line here is that drinking grapefruit juice while taking statins can lead to unexpectedly high doses of the treatments in your bloodstream.

So if you must take these treatments, then make sure you are not also drinking grapefruit juice or eating grapefruit.

This isn’t an interaction that most doctors know about, so it’s important to educate yourself!
