Can testosterone be harmful?

Higher testosterone levels are great for your health – provided you’re able to keep estrogen down too.

Sometimes when men have low testosterone and they take a lot of supplemental testosterone, their estrogen skyrockets…

…and this increased estrogen can lead to poor health outcomes.

But research looking at levels of naturally produced testosterone gives us an idea of the benefits of this hormone in itself.

Researchers discovered that men with higher levels of naturally produced testosterone were significantly less likely to die over a 20 year period.

Higher testosterone was also associated with a significantly lower risk of dying from cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Where possible, it’s probably better to help your body to produce more testosterone naturally, rather than take testosterone treatments.

The research was carried out at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge in the UK. The findings were published in Circulation.

Testosterone is absolutely essential for optimal male health.

But a couple of factors have caused confusion over the health benefits of this hormone.

“The relation between endogenous testosterone concentrations and health in men is controversial.”

First, a number of incorrect theories have been proposed which argue that testosterone can be harmful to the prostate and other parts of the body.

These theories have been proven incorrect, yet they persist.

One of the reasons these types of theories persist is because testosterone can be easily converted into estrogen.

And excess estrogen is harmful.

One of the things that can cause excess estrogen is extremely high testosterone.

If you supplement high levels of testosterone, you need to take something to prevent high estrogen.

And if you look at research in men with high levels of supplemental testosterone, you sometimes see poor health outcomes.

But these poor health outcomes are due to the high levels of estrogen, not testosterone.

The health benefits of testosterone are only “controversial” to people who do not understand the full picture.

That said, researchers in the UK were interested in the effect of naturally produced testosterone on men’s health.

So, they tracked the health of over 10,000 men who were between the ages of 40 and 79 years old (when the study began) over a 20 year period.

The researchers tested testosterone levels at the outset of the study, none of the men were taking testosterone supplements.

These were readings of “endogenous” or natural testosterone levels.

The study tracked death from all causes, death from cancer, and death from cardiovascular disease over the years.

Men with the highest levels of testosterone were 25% less likely to die than men with the lowest levels.

“Endogenous concentrations of testosterone at baseline were inversely related to death from all causes.”

In a similar comparison, men with high testosterone were 38% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease.”

“Testosterone concentrations at baseline were inversely related to mortality from cardiovascular disease.”

Higher testosterone levels were even more protective cancer.

The men with highest testosterone levels were 41% less likely to die from cancer over a 15 to 20 year period.

“Endogenous testosterone levels were inversely related to cancer deaths.”

Of course, there was a wide spread of age amongst the men included in the study.

There were varying levels of body fat, blood pressure, cholesterol, and a whole host of other risk factors.

The researchers took a large number of the most important risk factors into account before making their calculations

…removing some of the most likely variables that might lead to inaccurate conclusions.

“We adjusted for age, body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, alcohol intake, physical activity, social class, education, DHEA, androstenediol and sex hormone binding globulin.”

In another analysis, the researchers excluded all deaths which occurred in the first 2 years after the testosterone blood test.

This would remove many men who had been suffering from diseases which may have lowered their testosterones.

It gives us a clearer idea of the effect of testosterone levels on disease, rather than the effect of disease on testosterone levels.

The findings held up even under that type of analysis…

…further strengthening the relationship between naturally high levels of testosterone and decreased risk of death.

“Inverse relationships were also observed for deaths due to cardiovascular and cancer after the exclusion of deaths that occurred in the first 2 years.”

Men who produce more testosterone naturally are simply much less likely to die.

“Natural testosterone concentrations are inversely related to mortality due to cardiovascular disease and all causes.”

…so as you can see, giving your natural testosterone levels a boost is one of the best things you can do for your health as a man.
