Can sensitivity to this food cause premature gray hair?
As we age, we often notice changes in our appearance, and one of the most common changes is gray hair.
But this can sometimes occur at an earlier age.
That’s called premature graying of the hair.
While some people may embrace it, others may feel self-conscious about their greying hair – and be very stressed about it.
Stress is the enemy of your health and body.
We certainly don’t want that – it’s best to relax and let go of your buried feelings.
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t work on them – on the contrary, you should.
And if you’re having issues with premature hair graying, today’s study reveals a reason you may never have heard before.
Gluten sensitivity.
Let’s see.
This study was conducted at the University of South Carolina. It was published in the British Medical Journey.
This is about 2 individuals who experienced a complete change in hair color from dark brown to snow white in their 40s.
They came to these doctors to find out why.
The researchers analyzed the patient’s medical history and conducted various tests.
They confirmed that these 2 people had celiac disease (gluten sensitivity).
They immediately placed the patients on a gluten-free diet and monitored their hair.
In both cases, a reversal of the color change began a few weeks after starting a gluten-free diet.
In the first case, within three months of starting a gluten-free diet at age 53, his hair was noticeably darker at the temples.
Within five years, his hair was quite dark but with streaks of grey appropriate for his age.
In the second case, a woman, just after starting a gluten-free diet at age 58, her hair began to grow darker again.
“Within a few weeks of starting a gluten-free diet at the age of 58, her hairdresser commented that her hair was growing out darker, and by the age of 63, its appearance strikingly resembled that of the first patient. The hair change was restricted to scalp hair, and there was no alteration of bowel habit, but she felt much better.“
The researchers didn’t know the exact mechanism behind this, but the connection with gluten sensitivity is undeniable.
“Perhaps this type of premature greying is either the presenting sign of adult coeliac disease or is an accidental predictor of its later occurrence.”
I don’t really eat that much gluten because it nearly always makes me feel off.
Organic sourdough bread once in a while should be fine, but standard wheat products are not really good in the U.S.
I often hear that when people vacation in Europe and indulge in pastries and pasta, they feel perfectly fine, while in the U.S., such foods cause discomfort.
There is something about American wheat…
Anyhow, if you experience premature greying AND experience gluten sensitivity symptoms, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, or weight loss after you eat gluten products
…you may want to speak to your doctor about testing for celiac disease.
