Matt Cook here, and irritable bowel syndrome is a common problem thought to affect between 5 and 10% of the global population.

But some surveys in the United States have shown that almost 50% of people have at least mild IBS.

It can be a tricky thing to treat…

People are often told to eat more fiber – which can make things worse…

But there are a number of probiotic bacteria which really seem to help with this troublesome syndrome.

Let’s take a look at one probiotic which has been shown to improve both gastrointestinal and psychological symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

The treatment improved bloating/cramping, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, stomach rumbling, nausea, vomiting, headache, and anxiety.

The human research was carried out at Sun Magnetica in Maharashtra, India. The paper was published in Medicine.

The authors of the study were interested in the effects of a probiotic bacteria called Bacillus coagulans…

…a probiotic which is widely used in animal feed and is becoming more popular as a human supplement.

They used a strain called LBSC [DSM17654].

“We evaluated the safety and efficacy of Bacillus coagulans in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).”

The researchers carried out a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trial comparing the probiotic to an inactive placebo capsule.

“In this interventional, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study, 40 subjects were screened and randomized into 2 groups.”

There were 20 people in each group and only two dropped out of the study while it was ongoing.

The study lasted for almost 12 weeks.

“Similar dosages were received by both the arm, that is, placebo (vehicle) and interventional arm for a period of 80 days.”

The effect of the supplement was assessed using a multifactorial questionnaire.

The participants reported any changes in their gastrointestinal symptoms as well as changes in other symptoms which are often related to IBS.

The results showed many improvements from bacillus coagulans.

“Assessment showed significant improvement in interventional arm compared to placebo.”

The probiotic significantly improved a large number of symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome.

It seems to normalize bowel movements – decreasing the incidence of both diarrhea and constipation.

“Intervention improvement was seen on symptoms such as bloating/cramping, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, stomach rumbling, nausea, vomiting.”

The research also uncovered that this probiotic improved other symptoms linked to irritable bowel syndrome.

Bacillus coagulans decreased the incidence of headaches and anxiety – both of which can be caused by gastrointestinal problems.

A number of people in the intervention group had significant improvement.

Some people ended up with no symptoms by the end of the trial.

Most of the participants reported significant improvements in stool formation.

All of the indicators are that this probiotic is beneficial for many aspects of irritable bowel syndrome.

“Maximum of “no symptoms” cases and mild to moderate gastrointestinal symptoms along with improved stool consistency were from the interventional arm.”

The researchers also took a look inside the gastrointestinal system of the participants.

They found no differences in the gut linings of the two groups.

Nobody reported significant side-effects from the probiotic.

“Endoscopy revealed no clinical difference of gastrointestinal mucosa between both the arms. B coagulans LBSC was well tolerated with no serious adverse events.”

The researchers concluded that this bacteria is safe and effective for IBS.

It can treat both gastrointestinal and other symptoms of this common troubling syndrome.

“B coagulans were safe for human consumption and efficacious in alleviating overall symptoms of IBS and thereby improving inclusive quality of life factors evaluated.”

You should always consult your healthcare practitioner for guidance on medical diagnosis and treatment.
