Are these best-selling remedies actually making arthritis and joint pain worse?
One of the most popular classes of treatments on pharmacy shelves are pain killers.
NSAIDs like Advil and Aleve are best sellers with millions of people in the US alone taking these for joint pain, headaches, and other pain conditions.
All you have to do is walk into a pharmacy and look at the shelf space dedicated to the variations of these treatments to know that they sell well.
Here’s the problem…
Taking NSAIDs for osteoarthritis can actually cause damage to the joints!
This happens so often.
These tablets are used to treat symptoms (like pain) and end up making the thing causing the symptom (osteoarthritis) worse!
This is bad, bad news.
The estimate is that one in four adults has arthritis at some level and NSAIDs are one of the main ways that arthritis pain is treated.
In addition to the over the counter treatments like Advil and Aleve, nearly 30 million people in the US are taking NSAIDs by prescription.
You probably already know that NSAIDs are very effective pain killers.
According to research presented at the Radiological Society of North America, NSAIDs also break down the synovial membrane of the knee causing worsening of arthritis.
“Synovitis mediates development and progression of osteoarthritis and may be a therapeutic target. Therefore, the goal of our study was to analyze whether NSAID treatment influences the development or progression of synovitis and to investigate whether cartilage imaging biomarkers, which reflect changes in osteoarthritis, are impacted by NSAID treatment.”
The people in this study — who all had osteoarthritis — had MRI scans four years apart, and what they found…
…was that the patients who were taking NSAIDs had more deterioration of their knee joints than those who were not taking NSAIDs.
“On the one hand, the anti-inflammatory effect that normally comes from NSAIDs may not effectively prevent synovitis, with progressive degenerative change resulting in worsening of synovitis over time. On the other hand, patients who have synovitis and are taking pain-relieving medications may be physically more active due to pain relief, which could potentially lead to worsening of synovitis, although we adjusted for physical activity in our model.”
Although this study was done on knee joints, I don’t think it’s too much of a leap to think that this type of deterioration is also happening in other joints when people take NSAIDs to treat arthritis pain.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the only negative side effect that NSAIDs can have.
They can also cause:
- Stomach problems including nausea and ulcers
- Stroke, cardiac, arrest, and heart attack
- A-fib
- Heart failure
- Fluid retention
- High blood pressure
- Liver damage
- Kidney damage
- Rashes on the skin
- Ear ringing
- Breathing problems and asthma
- Changes in vision
I’m not saying to never take an NSAID…
I take them occasionally myself.
What I am saying is that you may want to consider caution when taking NSAIDs over the long term.
They can worsen joint issues and they can cause serious breathing problems.
And while it’s not on this list, heavy NSAID use is also associated with erections problems in men.
After adjustment for age, race, ethnicity, smoking, body mass index, and various comorbidities, that worked out to a 1.22-fold greater likelihood of erectile dysfunction in NSAID users, the researchers reported online in the Journal of Urology.
It’s amazing to me that we are just figuring out how dangerous these “treatments” can be…
Let it be a reminder to tread with caution and pay attention to your body when using treatments like these regularly…
…and also an encouragement to try other natural treatments whenever possible.
