Collagen is the most abundant protein found in the body. 

Not long ago people used to eat plenty of it.

But these days the trend toward lean, clean cuts of meat means that most of us don’t get much collagen any more.

Dietary collagen is extremely important — it is anti-inflammatory — balancing out the inflammatory effects of proteins and other foods.

Glycine is the most abundant amino acid in collagen (20 to 30% by weight) and research has shown that glycine has potent effects on inflammation.

Just a teaspoon of glycine lowers HbA1c and inflammatory markers in people with type II diabetes. 

This means that collagen or gelatin (cooked collagen) could have massive benefits for people with diabetes.

The human study was carried out at Hospital de Especialidades, Centro Medico Nacional in Mexico City. The results were published in the Journal of Investigative Endocrinology.

All proteins are made up of smaller building blocks called amino acids.

On their own, or in proteins, these building blocks can have potent effects in the body.

Some of these amino acids have been shown to boost insulin, which could help some diabetics lower blood sugar.

“Amino acids have been shown to stimulate insulin secretion and decrease HbA1C in patients with Type 2 diabetes.”

HbA1C is a blood test which shows long-term blood sugar levels — diabetics want this number lower.

On its own, boosting insulin probably won’t help in the long term.

But decreasing inflammation might — inflammation is a major accelerant in diabetes.

In cell experiments, glycine greatly improves levels of inflammatory proteins in the blood.

So the researchers were curious as to the effect of glycine in people with type II diabetes.

They recruited 74 patients with type II diabetes.

The participants were given just 5g of glycine or a placebo for three months.

The researchers compared HbA1c and inflammation before and after the experimental period.

People taking a teaspoon of glycine a day had significantly lower levels of HbA1c — meaning their blood sugar control had significantly improved.

“HbA1c levels of patients given glycine were significantly lower after three months of treatment compared to the placebo group.”

Proteins which cause inflammation decreased after glycine supplementation.

On the other hand, proteins which lower inflammation were increased after taking the supplement.

Glycine had a potent anti-inflammatory effect — something which should improve diabetes in the long run.

“Patients treated with glycine had a significant decrease in inflammatory proteins and also an increase in anti-inflammatory proteins.”

The researchers concluded that glycine could have very beneficial effects for people with type II diabetes.

“Glycine is likely to have a beneficial effect on innate and adaptive immune responses and may help prevent tissue damage caused by chronic inflammation in patients with type II diabetes.”

Tissue damage is a serious problem in diabetes.

All of the major complications can be explained by this process — which is partially blocked by glycine.

One of the problems with glycine supplements is finding one which is pure and safe to take.

I don’t trust any on the market right now.

Luckily both collagen and gelatin can safely supply a significant amount of glycine.

1 ounce of either of these proteins will supply more glycine than was used in this study. 

So it’s a great idea to get an ounce or two of collagen or gelatin per day.

They are pretty much identical nutritionally — so it’s really just about which one you prefer to eat.
