Warning: this doctor-recommended treatment destroys gut health

Our guts are teaming with life that isn’t exactly… human.

In fact, a great deal of the cells in our body aren’t human at all.

These non-human cells are called our gut microbiome

And it consists of all the bacteria and viruses that set up camp in our stomachs and intestines and call our bodies home.

This sounds kind of gross at first glance…

But having a healthy gut microbiome is one of the keys to having a healthy immune system and overall good health.

Inside the gut live billions of health-promoting bacteria, collectively called the gut microbiome. They act like a giant chemical factory that produces a wealth of different substances that pass through the intestinal wall, enter into the blood circulation and from there affect the body’s cells in different ways.

The gut microbiome is sensitive to what we eat and to the medicines we take.

With the microbiome being in medical news more and more often…

Researchers are starting to look at what influences the health of these gut critters.

In a study from the University of Copenhagen, researchers took a look at how different treatments and combinations of treatments affect the gut.

One of the worst culprits for changing the gut in a negative way are treatments that are used to treat gastric acid.

These fall under the category of PPIs (proton pump inhibitors).

In this case, the researchers found bacteria that is usually found in the mouth in the gut.

That’s a setup for colon cancer.

“In the colon of people who take gastric acid treatments, we found relatively high levels of bacteria that are normally only present in the oral cavity. Stomach acid usually kills bacteria from the oral cavity that try to escape to the gut where they do not belong. But this is not the case when you use these gastric acid inhibitors. The observation we have made is important because the presence of oral bacteria in the colon is associated with an increased risk of developing some types of colon cancer,” says Professor Oluf Pedersen.

These are nasty treatments that are sold both over the counter and by Rx.

They’ve widely been considered safe, but they aren’t anywhere near as safe as most people think they are.

They include treatments like Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid.

Another category of treatment that causes problems with the microbiome is antibiotics.

Not unexpectedly, the researchers found that repeated antibiotic treatments over the past five to ten years is associated with a less diverse gut microbiome. Healthy people tend to have a diverse gut microbiome, whereas the microbiome of people who live with chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, tends to be less diverse.

This one isn’t very surprising, but it’s still quite concerning…

Because frequent antibiotic use seems to set you up for diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.

Now… I’m not saying to just go off of treatments that your doctor gives you, and antibiotics in particular can be life saving.

What I am saying is that you need to be aware of how treatments can affect your body in unexpected ways that can dramatically impact your long-term health.

How treatments affect the microbiome is a fairly new area of research, but it is an important one.

Because if your gut isn’t healthy then you are not likely to be healthy.

Taking care of your gut health is absolutely critical to your overall health.
