It’s long been known that grapefruit juice contains chemical compounds that slow down the body’s ability to get rid of estrogen.

The most potent form of estrogen is estradiol. And the scientists here used women that had no ovaries, so that they could give these women a single dose of oral estradiol and observe the effects of grapefruit juice without worrying about the ovaries’ effects of adding more estrogen.

Grapefruit juice had a stunning effect. It delayed the body’s ability to get rid of estrogen.

This is a great argument for not drinking grapefruit juice or eating grapefruits.

Estrogens effects include increasing cell division, increasing inflammation, increasing water retention. These are useful things in moderation.

But most men and women today have excessively high estrogen already. The last thing they need is grapefruit juice.

Could it be the quercetin?

Querecetin along with Naringenin and kaempferol are thought to be responsible chemicals in grapefruit juice. As the same researchers found: “At the highest concentrations tested of the respective flavonoid, there was approximately 75-85% inhibition of estriol formation.”

This may be a powerful argument to avoid supplementing with quercetin.

1. How are grapefruit and estrogen related?
Though grapefruit is considered a high source of Vitamins, it has a powerful effect on estrogen levels in the body. It is known that grapefruits have very important ingredients like Vitamin C, antioxidants and phytonutrients which are essential for the human body. Grapefruit consists of compounds that can greatly reduce the risk of cholesterol and can effectively lower blood pressure levels. It also consists of many other nutrients like Calcium, Vitamin E, niacin, folate, potassium, phosphorus, manganese, and zinc. Grapefruit does also have many heart benefits and has also been found extremely beneficial in promoting a healthy triglyceride to HDL ratio in the blood. Some research papers show that Grapefruit consumption can lead to an increase in the Estrogen levels in the body thus leading to Breast Cancer in women. However, the effect of grapefruit consumption on Men may not be as complex. Though grapefruit has been connected to the increase in the estrogen levels in the body, for men whose testosterone and estrogen levels are normal, it might have no harmful effects.
