Raising testosterone using red light

We’ve discussed the power of red light therapy reseaarch in this newsletter before.

But today, I’m going to specifically talk about using red light to improve testosterone and testicular function.

Light, especially sunlight, stimulates various processes in the body, and we’ve known that for a while.

UV light from the sun or other sources, for example, can stimulate the production of vitamin D in the body.

But too much light isn’t good either.

That means that you can see benefits up to a certain point, but then they level off.

Or it can become detrimental instead.

Think of how UV Light will stop being beneficial and cause a sunburn, or worse.

You’ve probably experienced this yourself, right?

But today we’re not talking about UV light.

I think it’s dangerous to play with UV — other than spending time in the sun which is WONDERFUL.

Instead, today we’re going to talk about red light therapy benefits.

It’s important to note that light has both local and systemic effects.

So light does not have to be focused only on the local area that you want to treat.

Exposing one area of the body can benefit your entire body, or system.

For instance, if you focus light on your neck, you may benefit your prostate or testicles.

But focusing the light WHERE you want it has an even greater positive effect.

For red and infrared light, both the systemic and local effects can stimulate testosterone.

AND, they act both indirectly and directly.

It’s help from every direction!

First, studies like this one show that red light improves thyroid function.

The researchers exposed these mice to red light on their thyroid.

The thyroid sits on your neck, wrapped around both sides near your Adam’s apple.

These findings are great news.

We know that we want better thyroid function from other newsletters.

And better thyroid function can lead to high testosterone levels.

Now, we know that higher thyroid levels improve metabolism.

And then better overall metabolism leads to better functioning of specific parts of the body as well.

But red light can also stimulate testosterone locally.

If you shine red light directly on the testicles, it improves testosterone.

Even better!

In this study, researchers used 670nm red light or 808nm infrared light on rat’s testicles.

And then they compared these rats to controls.

The rats receiving infrared and red light had 32% and 564% higher testosterone respectively!

This is when compared to controls on the fourth day of treatment.

However, that wasn’t the complete story.

There were negatives to the results.

The rats that received infrared light on their testicles had testicular tissue that was “irregularly arranged following irradiation.”

It’s unclear from the study what exactly caused this damage to the tissue.

It could have been the infrared wavelength, the dose of the light, or heat generated from the dose.

It may also have been a combination of all three.

Regardless of the cause, all three of these can be avoided when using light therapy on the testicles.

And you’ll want to keep these issues in mind if you choose to try light therapy.

Here’s how to use light therapy to increase your testosterone and still avoid these problems.

First, use only red light in the wavelengths of 600-700nm, and avoid infrared.

Red light probably better than infrared.

So I’d go with 670nm light which is visible light.

The infrared light is IN-visible, but it’s still light (it appears on a camera or your phone but not to the human eye.)

Second, limit the time of exposure.

It depends on the device you use, but five to ten minutes should work.

Third, limit exposure to light sources like LEDs that don’t give off excess heat.

Lastly, if you’d like to experiment with longer doses of light, shine it on other parts of your body for systemic effects.

So if someone asks you, “does light therapy work?” you’ll be able to tell them your experiences.

Be careful though!

And when in doubt, talk to your doctor.

Red light is powerful stuff!

How does red light therapy affect testosterone?

Inside of the testicles are the Leydig cells, which produce a lot of the bodies testosterone. Testosterone is also produced in other organs including the adrenal organs and the skin, but the majority is made in the  Leydig in the testicles. The manufacturing of sperm is a very energy intensive process. Red light in the 660 nm or 880 nm range can actually assist the cells in creating more energy and therefore increasing the production of testosterone. Red light increases testosterone by freeing a particular chemical factory located in each cell, cytochrome P450. When the cells in the testicles are trying to manufacture testosterone, they are using up energy located inside of the cellular mitochondria. Those mitochondria get clogged with nitric oxide and red light freeze that nitric oxide from the mitochondria and allows the cytochrome P4 50 to make more energy more quickly. The result is that red light will increase your libido and increase the production of sperm and increase the production of testosterone. Most men never expose any light to their testicles and as a result, when you expose the right red light in the right dosage, you will be amazed at the improvement. Be careful though, as too much red light can actually be damaging and you never want to heat up anything down here or overexposed things.

Does infrared light damage testicles?

Infrared light and near infrared light is invisible to the naked eye so if you are using an infrared LED you will actually not see it at all and it will look like it is off. Your phone can pick up infrared and near infrared so it will show in the phone camera the infrared light bulbs as lit up even though the naked eye does not see it.Infrared light does not assist the testicles the way red light does. It can also penetrate deeply which is a benefit to it but overall it does not have the same benefit as red light. To my knowledge there are no studies showing in a fenced infrared light on the testicles. If you want to increase testosterone you want to use more red light rather than infrared light. This is one reason why you also want to be careful about any bold the gets hot because the last thing you want is heat down there. A good red light source will not feel hot and will not be hot and if you are careful and don’t expose your testicles too long, the light will penetrate and do benefit rather than harm.If you use infrared light it can cause heat to build up and actually be harmful.

How does red light therapy affect thyroid?

If you expose your thyroid to red light you can actually increase the output of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is located around your throat kind of a butter shot butterfly shaped  gland wrapped around the front of your throat just above where your neck meets the shoulders. For most men, the thyroid gland slows down and produces less thyroid hormone as they age.Thyroid hormone is the master switch to metabolism. So if thyroid hormone levels fall, your metabolism falls. Your metabolism becomes lower and slower. Now in order to keep alive, your body must kick out more stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol to make up for low thyroid. The problem is that for many men, they are not aware that their thyroid is not at a high enough level. And blood tests often don’t show or reveal how low your thyroid really is. Most doctors don’t know how to treat low thyroid called subclinical hypothyroidism. That’s why what you want to do is try red light because the good red light of the right frequency on your thyroid can actually kickstart the thyroid into producing more thyroid gland and over a few months you can restore your metabolism.Be sure you don’t heat up your thyroid gland and be sure you don’t use too much red light. Too much can be damaging.
