Memantine

“He didn’t even know me when I went to visit.”

That’s what my friend Bill said about his dad a few years after he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s is an incredibly difficult disease to deal with when one of your loved ones has it.

And it’s even scarier when it’s staring you in the face as part of your own future.

For many people, Alzheimer’s has at least some genetic components.

So if your parents have it, then you’re more likely to get the disease yourself.

Unfortunately, once you’re displaying symptoms of Alzheimer’s there are no good current treatments for the disease.

And by that time your brain is so far gone there may never be good treatments.

According to said George Bloom, a UVA professor and chair of the Department of Biology:

“Based on what we’ve learned so far, it is my opinion that we will never be able to cure Alzheimer’s disease by treating patients once they become symptomatic.”

But new evidence shows that we may be able to prevent Alzheimer’s disease from forming in the first place.

[cmamad id=”19727″ align=”center” tabid=”display-desktop” mobid=”display-desktop” stg=””]

This could eliminate or delay the onset of the disease – allowing people to live much healthier lives well into their old age.

Alzheimer’s is really common.

A lot of people like to think: “Alzheimer’s won’t happen to me.”

But if you live long enough, your chances of developing the disease are about the odds of a coin toss. And that’s scary.

“About 50 percent of people who reach the age of 85 will develop Alzheimer’s disease. Most will die within about five years of exhibiting the hallmark symptoms of the disease – severe memory loss and a precipitous decline in cognitive function.”

Fortunately, thanks to new research, it seems that we may be able to prevent Alzheimer’s from forming in the first place.

A common Alzheimer’s treatment may prevent the disease.

I’m always interested in new and novel uses for already approved drugs.

That’s because we already understand any side effects and at least some of the long-term problems with drugs that have been on the market for a while.

Memantine has been on the market since 2002.

Its current use is for treating the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

However, it may work even better as a preventative.

“Researchers have found that an FDA-approved drug, memantine, currently used only for alleviating the symptoms of moderate-to-severe Alzheimer’s disease, might be used to prevent or slow the progression of the disease if used before symptoms appear.”

Are you at risk for Alzheimer’s because you have a family history or carry the Alzheimer’s gene?

Then preventative medicine and lifestyle adjustments may be your best bet for staving off the disease.

“The best hope for conquering this disease is to first recognize patients who are at risk, and begin treating them prophylactically with new drugs and perhaps lifestyle adjustments that would reduce the risk.”

There seems to be a lot of promise that memantine may work as a preventative medicine…

And prevent Alzheimer’s from forming in the brain in the first place.

“The experiments suggest that memantine might have potent disease-modifying properties if it could be administered to patients long before they have become symptomatic and diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.”

But… Before you go rushing off to the doctor asking for a prescription, you need to understand the risks.

Like most pharmaceuticals, memantine carries its own risks…

Because this is new research, doctors may not be willing to give you a prescription for memantine for preventative reasons anyway.

And, even if they are, it’s important to be aware of the risks of any pharmaceutical you take.

The chart below lists some of the common side effects of memantine.

Most people won’t experience many or any of the side effects, but some people will.

It is important to understand the benefits versus the risks of any drugs you might go on.

It’s exciting that we may be able to prevent Alzheimer’s from forming through pharmaceuticals.

In the meantime, it’s a good idea to take care of your health in general.

Exercise, eating plenty of fruits, and getting enough sleep have all been shown to have massive health benefits and reduce the risk of dementia.
