Rou Cong Rong is a very popular folk aphrodisiac.
Scientific studies show that it boosts male hormones – and that reputation might have merit.
This animal study was conducted by universities in Canada and China. The results were published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Biology.
Rou Cong Rong is made from the plant Cistanche tubulosa.

This study set out to find the source of Rou Cong Rong’s alleged androgenic effect.
Androgens are hormones that activate androgen receptors.
And the activation of these androgen receptors is responsible for the development of male characteristics.
“Pharmacology studies have shown that Rou Cong Rong possesses an androgen-like effect; however, the exact mechanism is unclear.”
Androgen activity also plays a major role in male sexual function.
Testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) are key androgens.
The scientists made a strong alcohol extract of Rou Cong Rong.
Then they gave it to rats to see if there was any effect on their androgens.
“We determined the effect of ethanol extract of Rou Cong Rong on hormone levels and testicular steroidogenic enzymes in rats.”
The scientists tried a number of different doses of Rou Cong Rong on different groups of rats for about three weeks.
“Rats were fed with different doses of Rou Cong Rong (0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 g/kg) by intragastric administration for 20 days.”
Along with androgen testing, the scientists analyzed the rats’ sperm quality.
“Sperm parameters were measured by a staining and counting method.”
Rou Cong Rong increased testosterone by up to 50% after three weeks.
“Testosterone levels of the middle- and high-dose groups exhibited increases of 1.5- and 1.3-fold, respectively.”
The highest dose only increased testosterone by 30%.
It seems that with Rou Cong Rong there is a sweet spot – more is not better.
In addition to the increase in testosterone, sperm count went up too.
Medium and high doses of Rou Cong Rong more than doubled sperm count.
“The study illustrates that the administration of Rou Cong Rong in medium and high dose increased sperm count (2.3- and 2.7-folds).”
Sperm was healthier and more plentiful. Sperm motility increased to 1.4 fold.
“Rou Cong Rong increased sperm motility 1.3 and 1.4-folds in the medium and high dose groups.”
Sperm health seemed to improve as shown by lower levels of abnormal sperm.
“Rou Cong Rong decreased levels of abnormal sperm (0.76- and 0.6-folds).”
These results indicate that Rou Cong Rong may have potent effects on fertility.
Rou Cong Rong may also be a viable aphrodisiac.
Complex analysis of genes and enzymes in the testicles of the animals identified the effect of Rou Cong Rong.
Rou Cong Rong upregulates the production of androgenic enzymes and testicles.
“Our results suggest that the increase in sex hormone levels could be mediated by the induction of testicular steroidogenic enzymes.”
There are some reasons to be cautious…
The highest dose of Rou Cong Rong did NOT produce the greatest increase in testosterone.
And the highest dose DID cause some stress to the liver.
“It was also found that high dose of Rou Cong Rong can cause mild hepatic edema.”
