Common light bulbs emit different colors of light.

The mixture of these colors gives the effect of white light.

But some of the colors in the spectrum has been stripped from modern light bulbs.

These days, lightbulbs are more biased towards blue rather than white.

This sounds freaky, but our modern overexposure to blue light seems to be a factor in prostate cancer and breast cancer.

But it may not sound so freaky if you understand that blue light at night interrupts sleep patterns and alters hormones.

These researchers conducted their study at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health and published their results published in the Journal of Environmental Health Perspectives.

Science already knows that cancer rates are higher in people who work night shifts.

And they think this is probably because of the change in hormones caused by keeping irregular hours… at least partially.

Abnormal sleeping patterns (circadian disruption) definitely wreak havoc with your health.

Exposure to inappropriate lighting late at night is also a suspect for causing the same health problems.

“Night shift work, exposure to light at night, and circadian disruption may increase the risk of hormone-dependent cancers.”

The researchers evaluated data from over 4,000 men and women in Spain.

For the study, they selected 1,200 women with breast cancer and a similar number without breast cancer.

They also enrolled over 600 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and over 800 who did not have prostate cancer.

The coordinators of the study asked all the participants to complete questionnaires to get a comprehensive understanding of participants’ household environmental light exposure.

The researchers were particularly interested in exposure to light late at night…

Artificial light does most of its damage late at night…

“Indoor artificial light at night information was obtained through questionnaires.”

They also used the postal codes of the participants to gather information about the outdoor lighting in their neighborhoods late at night – street lights.  

“We assessed remotely sensed light intensity and blue light spectrum information for each geocoded longest residence of each subject.”

This survey used satellite images from the international space station to assess the color and intensity of outdoor nighttime lighting.

“Outdoor light at night was analyzed using images from the International Space Station (ISS) available for Barcelona and Madrid for 2012–2013.”

And, indeed, the study found an association between outdoor blue light at night and prostate cancer and breast cancer.

“Exposure to outdoor artificial light at night in the blue light spectrum was associated with breast cancer and prostate cancer.”

The researchers also found that men who slept in bright rooms have a higher risk of prostate cancer.

“Compared with those who reported sleeping in total darkness, men who slept in ‘quite illuminated’ bedrooms had a higher risk of prostate cancer.”

It seems that light at night is associated with increased cancer – especially blue light.

“Both prostate and breast cancer were associated with high estimated exposure to outdoor nighttime light in the blue-enriched light spectrum.”

These blue-enriched lights are very common now because they are more energy efficient.

It takes less energy to light an area when you cut out some of the wavelengths and leave mostly blue light.

Sure, this study only shows an association.

But there are many other reasons to believe that blue light at night can be harmful.

When blue light hits your eye, your eye sends signals telling your brain that it is daytime.

And these signals mess up the critical wake/sleep cycle…

The wake/sleep cycle has a well-known association with cancer.

Blue light is stimulating – so it is great for us in the morning.

When we get sunlight in the morning, the blue light component wakes us up.

But we are not supposed to be exposed to lots of blue light at night.

I suspect that blue light at night will soon be outed as one of the causes of cancer.

At night, I use bulbs that have a lower blue output.

You can use incandescent bulbs and halogen bulbs with an orange color.
