What if I told you beer could improve insulin resistance?

This is not a joke!

A new study shows that a moderate amount of alcoholic beer can improve markers of insulin resistance.

This study from the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio de Janeiro was published in the journal Food Science.

The scientists first procured two different types of beer that were produced under controlled conditions.

One was a “non-alcoholic” beer (0.6%) and the other one was a reasonably strong 6% beer.

“Two beers were produced under known and controlled conditions from the same raw material – non-alcoholic and alcoholic beer with the addition of 6% grain alcohol.”

The researchers recruited 15 lucky men for the study. They were between the ages of 20 and 57.

There were three stages to the study – each 30 days long.

The first stage consisted of avoiding all alcohol.

Stage II introduced 330 mL of non-alcoholic beer.

Stage III used the same amount of alcoholic beer (about 12oz).

The study showed a slight improvement in markers of insulin resistance with non-alcoholic beer.

Non-alcoholic beer lowered insulin from an average of 6.02 to an average of 5.0.

The real benefits were seen with the introduction of alcoholic beer.

Insulin was lowered from an average of 5.0 to an average of 2.8 during the alcoholic beer experiment.

Alcoholic beer also brought down fasting glucose levels from 80 to 70.

The study concluded that alcoholic beer significantly helped markers related to insulin resistance.

“It was found that the use of alcoholic beer for 30 days reduced the blood insulin and fasting glucose, reducing insulin resistance.”

The men enrolled in this study were healthy when the study began.

So it would be interesting to see the if same benefits could be seen in unhealthy people.

The information generated in this study suggests that a small to moderate amount of beer could have beneficial effects on men’s health.

When the authors analyzed the data generated in this study to create a standardized assessment of insulin resistance – FIRI (fasting insulin resistance index) – they found a massive improvement.

For the FIRI assessment, lower numbers are better.

A decrease in FIRI means an improvement in insulin resistance.

No beer (Stage I of the study) recorded an average FIRI score of 1.08.

Non-alcoholic beer (Stage II) recorded a reduction in FIRI down to 0.92.

Alcoholic beer (Stage III) showed a drop in FIRI from 1.08 to 0.45.

12 ounces of beer per day for a month reduced the FIRI score by over 50%.

“FIRI was significantly lower when the volunteers drank alcoholic beer as compared to drinking non-alcoholic beer and not drinking alcohol.”

The study also showed changes in the lipid profile of the men included in the study.

“Daily intake of 330 mL alcoholic beer could statistically change the lipid profile and insulin sensitivity of adult men.”

Beer improved markers related to insulin resistance.

And it also changed the cholesterol profile of the participants in a way that the authors found to be beneficial.

“330 mL alcoholic beer per day could lower the ‘bad’ cholesterol and increase the ‘good’ cholesterol, and also help control the blood glucose levels.”

There is little doubt that consuming large amounts of alcohol is a bad idea.

Even within this study, there were also indicators of negative effects from alcoholic beer.

The alcoholic beer increased free radicals – which can cause aging and cellular damage.

“Indicators of the oxidative balance worsened with the consumption of alcoholic beer, when the group consumed non-alcoholic beer the same effects were not observed.”

However, a benefit of beer is that it can lower psychological stress when used in moderation.

Whether the benefits of beer outweigh the costs is a tough call.

However, selecting a good quality beer and using it in moderation minimizes any downsides.
