A new study investigates the relationship between bacteria, depression, and metabolic syndrome.

This study shows that probiotic bacteria can prevent depressive behaviors in rats on a high-fat diet.

This study was conducted at the Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University and published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity.

Scientists had already noticed a correlation between major depressive disorder and metabolic syndrome.

People suffering from depression are more likely to be overweight and/or to have type 2 diabetes.

Another observation that prompted this study was that metabolic syndrome and depression are both associated with changes in gut bacteria.

The study used two breeds of rats.

One of the rat breeds tends to exhibit a lot of depressive behaviors and has been used to study depression.

The other rat breed is the opposite – it has a low tendency to exhibit depressive behaviors.

The depressive-type rats have even more depressive behaviors when given a high-fat diet.

The scientists had shown this in a previous experiment.

But in this study, they wanted to find out if the high-fat diet was affecting gut bacteria – and if this gut bacteria was the cause of the more extreme depressive behavior.

To find out if bacteria were involved in depression induced by a high-fat diet, the rats were given beneficial probiotic bacteria to counteract the effects of bad bacteria.

“We therefore investigated whether multispecies probiotics possessed antidepressant-like effect or if it protected against the pro-depressant-like effect of a high-fat diet.”

The scientists found that the high-fat diet led to depressive behaviors in rats during a swim test.

Rats were put in water and timed to see how long it took them to give up swimming.

“High-fat diet exacerbated the depressive-like behavior in depression-sensitive rats in the forced swim test – rats on a standard food remained unaffected.”

Treatment with probiotic bacteria prevented depressive behaviors in rats given the high-fat diet.

“Probiotic treatment completely abolished the pro-depressant-like effect of a high-fat diet, but it did not affect rats on the control diet.”

The probiotic led to improved behaviors in rats fed a high-fat diet.

But it didn’t affect the rats on a normal diet.

This indicates that the depressing effect of a high-fat diet may be caused by bacterial changes.

The scientists believe that the probiotic treatment reverses a metabolic problem created by bacteria that increase with a high-fat diet.

These metabolic changes were reversed by beneficial bacteria.

“Our findings suggest that depression may hold a dysmetabolic component that responds to probiotic treatment.”

These findings may lead to understanding the connections between depression, metabolic syndrome, and gut bacteria.

“This finding has wide implications owing to the high metabolic comorbidity in depression.”

The probiotic that was given to these rats was mostly lactic acid bacteria.

That’s like the type of bacteria that’s in yogurt.

Other studies with different types of rats have shown that similar probiotics can reverse depressive-type behaviors in these animals.

Diet has a very potent effect on the type of bacteria that live in the gut.

Changing what you eat can increase or decrease different types of bacteria very quickly.

These changes in bacteria can lead to increased inflammation. And inflammation is associated with both depression and metabolic syndrome.

Changes in gut bacteria can also lead to alterations in chemicals that are known to alter mood – such as serotonin and GABA.

Most of the body’s serotonin is created in the gut – and it can have a very potent effect on mood and metabolism.

Increased serotonin from bacteria can lower metabolism and increase the tendency toward depression.

Bacteria have also been shown to affect GABA.

GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid) is a calming neurotransmitter that opposes serotonin and can be altered by gut bacteria.

The interactions between diet, bacteria, metabolism, and mood are very complex and science is only beginning to understand them. 

Depression may prove to be more about an imbalance of bacteria in the gut than about chemical imbalance in the brain.
