I don’t know if this story about Abraham Lincoln is true, but it is said that:

When somebody would walk into a room, Lincoln would finish what he was doing before acknowledging the person standing in front of him.

This tale points to a reality of how our brains work that is almost completely ignored by society today.

But if we understand and use this principle, it can get us ahead in ways that nothing else can.

If you want to succeed in business, work, or relationships you have to find a way to stand out from the crowd.

And how to do this is surprisingly simple… and also pretty difficult the same time.

It all comes down to two words: focus and multitasking.

These two words are direct opposites to each other… and while our society values multitasking, what actually works is focus.

New studies of how the brain works are showing how true this is.

In this study on productivity and distracted driving, there are some extraordinarily interesting conclusions, not just for driving but for everything else in life.

As humans, we like to think we can multitask. And to a certain extent, we can.

We can wash dishes and think about the upcoming day.

We can walk and talk at the same time.

But when a task requires more of our attention, multitasking can actually have the opposite effect of what we intend – or it can even be disastrous.

Multitasking makes us stupid.

What’s happening in the multitasking brain applies to whatever pursuit you are engaged in. 

Whether you are working, or pursuing a relationship with a woman, or driving, the same basic principles hold true.

“More specifically, under dual-task conditions, participants became increasingly reliant on reconstructive, error-prone processes in memory, with high levels of false recall.”

So if we try to do just TWO things at once (not even three or four), our brains start making mistakes and LYING to us.

Being able to do tasks correctly the first time can help you get ahead, particularly at work.

But if you are multitasking, making mistakes becomes the default.

And that’s not all.

One of the ways that multitasking hurts us is by making us LESS productive:

Even though we THINK we are MORE productive.

Because our BRAIN IS LYING TO US.

It’s a weird thing because it’s all about your brain playing tricks on you.

Because you feel busy, your brain seems to think you are doing something IMPORTANT.

In reality, splitting your focus between two or more tasks makes you far LESS productive…

And not as happy either.

Focus is the answer… and here’s how to do it.

You have to do one thing at a time.

That’s tough, I’ll admit. Because your brain likes to distract you when something feels difficult or challenging.

Your brain will want you to go check out craigslist, eBay, Facebook, your favorite game on your phone… or whatever. To avoid the pain.

This is true EVEN if what you want to focus on will bring you a longer-term or better reward than what your brain is trying to get you to shift your focus to.

But every time you try to shift focus… you lose. By a LOT.

You FEEL busy, but you don’t actually get much done.

If you want to BLOW AWAY the competition at work and boost your productivity, try this.

Start on just one task. Turn off your phone. If you work on a computer, install a focus app on your browser.

THEN when your brain tells you to go check your email, check your messages, or go to some other distraction… stop and bring your attention to your breathing.

All you need to do is focus on 4 or 5 breaths instead of doing the distraction behavior.

The urge will usually pass. After that, you can return to the task at hand.

Most people who try this get 2 to 4 times the amount of work done…

…AND they are much happier because their brains go into a flow state.

And flow state – where you just enjoy the work you are doing in the moment and do it very well – is incredibly satisfying.

Multitasking might be making you inefficient and holding you back in your life.

By focusing on one thing at a time, you can end up displaying the masculine traits of doing what you say you will do when you will do it… and really getting it done.
